I used to love JRPGs and other turn based games. But latly I can't get myself to get threw them. At first I thought it was that I didn't care for the newer stories or that turn based combat got old.

THe other day I tried to play Starwars: Kotor and I realized that I just hate having to control more then one person. Had the same problem with Mass Effect, at least with M.E. the AI can hold its own in combat for the most part.

I guess I've fallen into a "I am the one" mindset. Or that I just can't connect to characters in a story if I have to do everything for them

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one... be it new cant go to old or even old cant go to new. Right now, I'm diving back into Oblivion. I'm really sad I can't steal all the candles and lanterns in the world... I loved having the most well lit house in all of Morrowind. Guess I'll have to find something new to steal in Oblivion.

I hope I can make my own home in Fallout 3!

you could always max out your Block and steal people's swords in mid-fight. that always puts a smile on my face!

I think that a lot of it has to do with nostalgia, right? I mean, if you weren't into some "classic" at the time it came out, and you go back, there have probably been many additional games with better graphics/stories so how can you stomach something from the past? I still wonder why I love TMNT so much.....

I really can't get into almost any console game any more, I just find PC so much easier to play and the range of games, old and new, I just find so much more interesting.

Then again I haven't completed a lot of the console games I've owned over the years, maybe this is due to the fact my gaming childhood consisted mainly of PS1 demo discs from Official Playstation Magazine which my uncle subscribed us to for a few years as a christmas present (I'm not trying to get sympathy but I don't think we ever had enough money to buy new games every few weeks or months).

In fact not until recent years, since I discovered PC games, the internet and such have I had as much of an interest in games as I do now.

I used to like Onimusha, and after playing a bit of Dawn Of Dreams, thought I would go back and play Onimusha 1-3.
I tried 1, I couldn't get into it. The moving was too frustrating. What were they thinking!? D-Pad to move. You've got two perfectly operational analog sticks!
I then took 1 out, and popped in 2. I couldn't get into that either, for the same reason as 1.
I then tried 3, and I just took it out when I found out it had THE SAME MOVING AS THE OTHER ONES.
So I just thought "Forget it." and went back to playing Dawn of Dreams.

I've had a lot of difficulty playing console shooters and (slower) paced RPGs as of late, older ones of course. Since my current PC seems to have taken the route to a slow and painstakingly annoying death I can't run half the stuff I used to be able to on the old machine so I'm stuck with some older stuff and I'm finding myself devoting time more towards reading webcomics because everything feels.. a tad bit overbearing and under endowed.
Though being (considerably.) young, I can't help but feel obligated to go back and play some of the games I've missed.
Like the older generation of gamers will make fun of me for it or something. Since I've never played a NES, SNES, Genesis or great PC classics (from what I hear) like Baldurs gate.

(Apologies for the (small) ramble.)

I used to love RPG's, tactics games, platformers, and Zelda and Mario games.

Now the majority of what I play are FPS's, FPS/RPG hybrids, and music games like GH, RB, and Audiosurf. I have no tolerance for JRPGS. (The Tales series and FFIV being recent exceptions.) I dislike RTS's (CoH being another exception) and I can barely stand to pick up Twilight Princess or Super Mario 64 even though I know they're great games.
this.

As hard as I try, I cannot seem to be able to get into Half-Life 2, despite all my friends telling me it is the greatest game ever. The poor graphics (by today's standards, of course)... ugh!

I'm more of a RPG & Fighting game guy now than I was as a kid. I remember watch my brother play FF:Mystic Quest on the SNES and thinking how boring it was until I got my hands on it. After that I was hooked, and I still play the old SNES RPGs to this day on my PC (emulators are the greatest thing ever made for PCs). As for current generation games they catch my attention till I beat them and get my trade in credit for them. Nothing is worth holding on to like back in the day at least in my opinion.

This is exactly how I feel about today's games. A few people have mentioned the difficulty of older games which, in some respects, is true, but take the infamously short Sonic the Hedgehog. I got that game one xmas morning and finished it by tea time. Did I want to trade it, no, because every play through was as fun as the first; let me change that; more fun, as you could try and better your performance.

Maybe it is me being jaded, but VERY FEW of today's games have that appeal to me.

I think my taste in games has changed dramatically.

Back in my true gaming era (the PS2 era, PS1 doesn't count as I barely had any games or atleast games that I played often) I didn't have a single M rated game. No shooters, no gritty games and such, no realistic serious storys or anything.

I had all adventure games, and the most mature game I had was Jak 3.

Now I basically have all shooters and M games. I don't know wether that's because there's a flood of FPSs on the market or just because I've become more mature but now I just don't buy adventure games or regular wholesome RPGs anymore.

it's not so much my taste, it is more of my circumstances.

currently, i wouldn't have the time to invest in a game like Super Mario Bros. where you have just 3 lives (and 3 continues?) to beat the game. re-mastering that is a comittment that would require an entire solitary evening.

now that i have kids, i have to be much more flexible with my time. i've haven't even been able to get any Oblivion time in lately.

ironically, old Arcade games have gained an appeal to them because their experience from beginning to end is a lot shorter than a console game. so in the same way that most older games are just not practical to play (fuck you solomon's key) there are other games that i would have deemed too shallow that fit perfectly with my current time constraints.
