Jackpot. I caouldn't have said it better myself (personally I love JRPGs and couldn't get a grip of Half-Life), but some people just bandwagon other people's ideas. That what we as a society were built for.
I hate those games because:
I thought Halo 3 played like a massive pile of overcooked lunchmeat (same with 1 and 2)
Assassin's Creed voyaging through the desert made me think "I could replicate this by walking".
Oblivion was a Morrowind wannabe. Nothing about it was very good. The controls felt awkward and the guild quests were particularly frustrating. And the beaming from place to place made me feel defeated. I liked walking everywhere in Morrowind, I made money off looting bandit hideouts that I passed in Oblivion while teleporting.

How can you say it was a 'wannabe'?? It was made by the same company! Clearly they knew where their series was going. It wasn't going to be any different...

I find nothing wrong with hating what is popular. A lot of popular things these days aren't very good.

What I do find wrong, is people constantly bitching about those popular things. Do you have nothing better to do?

Saying people here hate a game because it's popular or because Yahtzee said to is the biggest pile of crap. Believe it or not people happen to have genuine problems with these games period.

I wouldn't say that there are any games I have played that I hate due to their popularity; this tends only to apply to those which I haven't played.

One exception that comes to mind would be GTA4, however this is hardly an example of game universally adored.

I find that if there is a game I never intend to play, yet is popular, it makes it all the easier to sneer at those who argue in its favour; when I have no interest in something I tend to exaggerate the negatives and simply fail to regard positive aspects. I'm often quick to judge a game praised for certain qualities or aspects if I find them hard to like or simply disinteresting without taking into consideration that they might improve or be more likeable.

I am sure Zero Punctuation is related to this in a small way, but I think it is mostly because this is a neutral forum. If you go to the Infinity Ward forums, they worship CoD4. Go to the Bungie forums, they worship Halo. This forum also has a very small level of fanboys, if any. Most users here dont worship a particular game, or series, thus they see the flaws of overhyped games. The community here does not generally hate these games, but see them as overrated.

I see a lot of people on here who seem to hate or dislike games for no reason other than them appealing to *Gasp* casual gamers! Oh No! The frat boy demographic enjoys Guitar Hero, I better go and condemn it even though it's immense amounts of fun! What?! They like Halo 3 too?! I better go say how shitty that is regardless of the incredible graphics, sound effects and game play.

To me this is about the equivalent of "Indy Kids". Indy kids like to listen to Indy Bands, bands that are either local and unheard of outside of their home town, or work for Indy record labels, meaning they don't make much money and are still pretty much unheard of outside their state or among deeply devoted Indy kids elsewhere. They will go to shows, buy albums, even make t-shirts to support the band. But as soon as the band whose music they love so much gets offered a record deal with a big company, and can make a living doing what they love, they condemn the band as being sellouts and say the music has turned to shit, even it's the same fucking music they were making before.

Seems like the exact same thing to me, both piss me off immensely.

I am one of the few around here that will happily declare his love for games that seem unusually hated around here, and his hatred of games that seem loved. I am not a troll, these are my genuine opinions and I can back them all up reasonably and discuss it like an adult. Lets have a look at a few examples from the very thread:
[dl][dt]Halo 3[/dt][dd]Quite possibly my favourite shooting game of all time[/dd][dt]Oblivion[/dt][dd]This takes its place at the top of my list for favourite games[/dd][dt]Assassins Creed[/dt][dd]A good game, sure it had some flaws, but I had alot of fun with it[/dd][dt]Half-Life[/dt][dd]I don't see why everybody loves this game, I played it and only saw an average shooter with nothing overly special about it[/dd][dt]Call of Duty 4[/dt][dd]Now this may come as a shock to some people but I hate this game with a passion. The campaign was boring, the weapons were uninteresting and the multiplayer was surprisingly dull even tough I could find no obvious flaws with it[/dd][/dl]
I think I should stop now before more people get angry at me.

Why that isn't very nice at all. Here is me thinking that everybody was entitled to their own opinions. I was clearly wrong, everybody has to share Yhatzees opinion on everything, now I understand.

I've never thought of Halo as a good FPS even from the beginning. It really does nothing terribly new to the genre..And don't get me wrong, I LOVE FPS's. But when I look at Halo, yes I see very beautiful and colourful presentation, smooth graphic models, and even better framerate...however when I look around I notice some things that irritate me, I find the gameplay and the graphics s smooth are because the game lacks a fair amount DETAIL...I go in multiplayer and see that everyone is running around with the same character but just in a different colour. Weapons, (except for the sword thingy) are your standard FPS loadout: machine gun, pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher, sniper rifle etc.

other than the niceness of when you look up and you can see the entire 'halo', the game really isn't as innovative as everyone deems it imo, nor is it fun when 12 yrs old are screaming profanities and using other certain words that they heard in movies and don't even know the meaning.

I still have Halo:Combat Evolved for my PC, still installed, but it's got a really nice mod on it that makes it extremly enjoyable.

So yes, I hate Halo. But it's not because Yahtzee told me so.

Halo 3 was average.
As for Oblivion, Morrowind was better imo.
I really liked Assassin's creed, but I didn't like how I payed $60 for 8-9 hours of gameplay.

Edit: Oh and i'd have to say half-life would be tied with goldeneye for N64 as my favorite shooter ever, it was also the 1st shooter i've ever played (Goldeneye being the 2nd)

Shooter's aren't much my thing, but I really love SRPGs and JRPGs like Disgaea, FFT, Chrono Trigger, FF6 etc.. (not FFT: advance, I hate judges etc.. >.>)

Eh, I would say the games you mentioned were mediocre, bad? No. I had fun with Oblivion, now Halo? Nah, Its a load of bull. But despite Oblivion's dozens of bugs its still fun.

Maybe people pick on Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed especially here because we're all ZP fans.
I thought ZP liked assassin's creed, besides the repetive end, leper retard strength, and the women whoring themselves for money

But i still say halo 3 is overhyped and is just an average game, go play a PC fps, so much better and i'm sad to say i haven't gotten past the third part of the story in Oblivion... i either get game add, hit the "wall," or my comp dies

I dont see why people are making such a huge issue out of this.
Everyone has their personal opinion over different games of different genres. None of these games are by any means bad, some people just don't like them.

Assassins Creed - Yeah, it has its flaws, but still a pretty enjoyable game for what it is, I never completed it myself because I got tired of the repetition.

Halo 3 - I didn't enjoy this game at all, all I saw was a mediocre FPS. Sure the graphics are beautiful but Id choose new and innovative game play over pretty graphics any day.

Oblivion - I found this game quite interesting but not without its flaws. But it was enough to keep me occupied until id at least finished the main quest line.

Call of Duty 4 - I loved the campaign, one of the most immersive FPS games I have played personally, I didn't like the multiplayer though, it got very boring very quickly for me.

But as I stated above, this is just personal opinion, each to their own I guess.

I don't hate Halo 3 because it's popular, however I do have a strong disliking for it because it sucks. It's just more of the same we've seen before, a continuation of the same bland story I didn't even find compelling in the first game. It's also spawned one of the most ignorant communities on Live that won't even allow you to play a single match without being called something racist, homophobic, misogynistic, or generally ignorant.

I really liked Oblivion, so there's no hate going on there. And, Assassin's Creed was great, except for all the random bullshit like "I'll tell you what I know if you get these 29 flags I dropped in under 3 minutes. Oh yeah, if a guard sees you run you break your cover and have to start over. Well, get to it!" kind of bullshit. That, and the last hour really threw the entire established gameplay out the window by just having you fight hordes and hordes of guards ad nauseum.

This is the kind of attitude I'm talking about. I understand that it's only your opinion but I think it's flawed. Saying a game 'sucks' because it's too much like another game is like saying Pepsi is shit because it's too much like Coke or that Violet Crumble sucks because it's too much like Crunchie. Halo 3 is a decent shooter regardless of whatever else is on the market.

Here's a pro-tip for you, an opinion cannot be flawed. Opinions are personal feelings, and there can't be any flaw in a personal feeling. You may think my logic in coming to the opinion is flawed, however.

Though, if you were to state that I'd just defend my position by saying that Halo 1 and Halo 2 both sucked as well. Halo sucked because it had a very sparse assortment of baddies to fight, it recycled the same 3 level designs over and over, and the game was made artificially difficult as you progressed by just making the same old enemies harder to kill.

Halo 2 sucked by rehashing the same crap we had in Halo with a few new levels and a slapped together storyline. Halo 3 sucked by continuing this legacy of crap and doing nothing at all to improve on the core issues that made the game suck in the first place.
