My area is generally a great area to be in. Great detached housing, no chavs outside of shops or on corners, but one area in my town :/. Oh god you don't want to go, it's awful. If you need to walk through, don't do it alone and do it fast. I heard about a guy wearing a balaclava open up an old womans door holding a knife and scream like fuck, then slam it shut just to impress some friends. I also had a woman call me a "Posh bastard," even though my family's nowhere near rich because I was wearing a long coat that wasn't out of Asda, or some cheap tracksuit top. Plus I've seen people trying to force open car or house doors at least six times. There's also been two murders there that I've heard of. I really hate going to my friends house who lives there, who's had his window bricked and smashed with whiskey bottles. It's like the area on that great show Shameless, but worse.

Wow, and I thought that race relations over here in the states were bad. That's just...wow. I mean is this fairly common all over Britain or just in isolated pockets?

Dunno if it counts for anything, but I personally haven't seen anything like that before. Might just be because I've not been in the 'right' areas, but it's certainly not everywhere.

For what it's worth, I live with a Cyrenians Shelter on one side (it's basically a shelter for people who have been made homeless after time in prison) and a few elderly and minority families on the other, and that's next to a council estate. There are a few chav kids who are just loudmouth bastards to everyone, but there's no specific racism going on, or even victimising of the elderly couples.

I guess the chavs round here just piss off everyone. I guess that's a good thing?

It's pretty upsetting and shocking to see this. Yet at the same time I'm not surprised. (I'm white and British). Oddly enough though, I don't really see this as racism, it's hard for me to do so. I see it as a group of delinquents 'ganging' up on someone who is different to the offender themselves.

I'll try explain and demonstrate.

If you're Black. They'll call you a "N****r".
If you're asian. They'll call you a "Ch**k".
If you're from Pakistan or India. They'll call you a "Paki".
If you're British and have black hair. They'll call you an "Emo fag".
If you are quiet. They'll approch you and intimidate you.
If you have German heritage. They'll call you a nazi.
If you're jewish, they'll bully you for being Jewish.

Hell, I wear a hoodie with a wolf on it then I get people screaming abuse from their cars about that!

What I'm trying to say is that I don't see it as racist, I see it as people being d**kheads as they would with anyone else regardless of skin colour or beliefes. I know this is a very messed up opinion but it's something I've experienced and have to deal with.

What I'm trying to say is that it's not racist. It's just how rude some people are. The fact that the victim is of a different skin colour shouldmn't automatically make it racist, because that's racist in it's own way.

I've probably confused you here xD I hope you understand what I'm trying to say... If you're Black, White, Asian, Mexicna, whatever. There are people who will give you abuse regardless and only because of their own insecurities.

I live in a decent area in Leeds, in Yorkshire (5th most robbable area in the country, because we're surrounded by shitty areas), and the only problem I ever get here is from chavs driving past in their tiny cars who think long hair is "gay" (though I've since had a haircut). I'd be much happier if we banned hoodies, tracksuits and, to be honest, nylon clothing.

Perhaps then if I get mugged I am mugged by fashionable-looking people.

I am very much unsure of how to fix this, but perhaps bridging the gap between the rich and the poor would be an excellent start.

or perhaps burning the niebourhoods where this happens and the people that live there, i'm being serious. then replace them with better infrastrucure and people who have prospects, that would help solve the housing problem as well, everybody wins =D

Now, I say it was exactly what I expected, but if you're not from Britain or have never been around parts like that, you might be suprised. I also knew what to expect because it was filmed 5 minutes down the road from me.

The thing about it is though, while I'm sure we can all agree it's messed up and I'm glad people are finally shinning a light on that sort of thing, the only people shinning a light on it are the ethnic minoritys. Now it looks like the problem is just some ignorant racism by some very, very backwards people, but I'm white and British and I have got everything you've seen there walking down my street, when I go out I'll always try and get someone to gimme a lift to outside my area because I can not walk through it, did I mention I'm white and British?

So yea, I think it's good a light is being shon on it, but I could take a camera and get the exact same results myself, just replace the word 'Paki' with something else. While the attacks on that film were certainly racially driven, she could off been a ginger white person, or any type of person who isn't just like the culprits. (I'm not ginger by the way, no, for me they like to go with 'Jitter' and 'Mosher' as their substitute for 'Paki' of choice, which is especially perplexing when I'm wearing a Nas shirt)

So what are your opinions on the documentary? Were you suprised? Or was it pretty much what you expected? Is your area like this? Have you ever been victim to that sort of stuff?

I also really want some American opinions in here, I don't think most Americans ever get to see that side of Britain, so what does that make you feel?

EDIT: Just been reading a couple of articles about this documentary, seems the majority of people asked about it, including police and the head of the City Council are saying 'it's not that bad' and that this behaviour is rare.

Sorry, what? I can tell you from experience that it ain't rare, but you don't need to take my word for it, in the 8 weeks they lived there they got abused around 50 times, that's almost an average of once a day, if that's no big deal, then what is their idea of a real problem?

Well you see, what I wrote in my OP about this not neccesarily being racist even though it is of course very racist. The people in the video are being racist for the hell of it, they want some reason to start on someone and all they need is a little bit to grab onto, in the majority of cases it's race/religion because that's the easiest thing to spot, but I've known people get that sort of abuse and I have aswel for a number of different things, like I said it can be anything from hair length to how you dress. With alot of racism the culprits will do it because 'They took our jobs!' and 'They're terrorists', or what not. But look at the people responsible in that video, they don't care about jobs/economys/nationalism/national security, they just wanna kick off and the biggest and easiest target for them is foriegners.

Infact a great recent example was a women who faced the same things as seen in this video because her daughter was disabled, she ended up driving away with her daughter and setting the car a light with the both of them in it. I'll try and find a link...

A lot of the inbreds in that show are probably not just racist. I suspect that if they see anyone they don't recognise, they'll have a go, regardless of colour.

Because they're basically one step up from the missing link and have shit for brains, they'll pick on the first thing that they see as an easy target. Asians get the colour thing, I'd be attacked because I have red hair, tall people because they stand out, etc etc....

Racism is pretty bad on a lot of these estates, but don't think that because you're white, you'd escape any trouble.

It's a sad time in the United Kingdom as of now. It's even sadder that these people all live in Council Hosues and our Taxes keep THEM alive!

I live in a fairly nice area. We get ALOT of Chavs, but they're so ignorant and will side with anyone who is winning an argument, regardless of if the victor of said argument is a Chav or not.

Around here, they will always fall back to the classic 'Do you ant to fight?!', but none of them are brave enough to actually hurt you.
