My guess as to why they say anything is because they can without any ramifications. It's a very "liberating" world for those. I try to implement some real world class every once and a while.

My theory, make them confront the fact that they would'nt DARE talk that way anywhere else, and they generally quiet down.

Well simple theory really: people are dicks. I myself am included. I'm not outwardly insullting or offensive, but I wont restrain my thoughts to be "polite" in most cases on or off the internet. And it's true the large demographic of unintelligent forum-goers are between the ages of nine and twelve.
They call that the mean world hypothesis. Essentially people have the (incorrect) belief that most people are evil by default. A fantastically small proportion of the world is like that however they are the ones that receive the most attention seeing as their activities are out of the ordinary.
I know, I know I just like being the pessimest. Also being the strange kind of person I am, people regularly insult and otherwise try to offend me quite frequently, so I notice it more than some people.
Once I stopped assuming everyone hated me I suddenly stopped seeing people hating me. Turned out that a large part of my examination of other folks was tinting their actions in paranoia. I blame psychology for opening up this can of worms that is reality ;).

Well generally the few a-holes you do meet online are reclusive individuals. Most real life assholes are busy being real life assholes and can't be bothered with the internet unless they are looking up "bitches and hos" :p.

But yeah. When you spend your whole life being a stick thin male it probably is a bit empowering to finally have some sort of sway.

"Get off the fucking internet."

I really wished I could have throttled the guy who sent that to me

Ugh, printed word? Attempting to better yourself through the acquisition of knowledge?

What a faggy thing to do. Jk, k? Thnks

I only ever get insulted during videogames, not on forums and the like. My general rule is, if I can't say it to my mother, I won't type it. My mum is one awesome lady, so that rule is surprisingly lenient.

Does across video games count? I've been cursed out, called a scrub, and whatever else was meant to be said to me in a mangled up message because I threw out a taunt in SF4. (I lost btw) My response: "Good game to you too. Have fun." Didn't get a message back, negative or otherwise. I did it again to another guy, lost again, got flamed again. After I sent back pretty much the same message, he cooled down and was pretty civil about it.

Yes, some people are quite stupid online. Usually, they don't do much more if you don't flame back. Hell, being polite back gets them to give up sooner or later most of the time. That's probably my ultimate weapon against those types of guys.

Oh, next guy I taunted and lost against, he sent me a message saying I could have won if I was more serious. That's not bad at all. Not everyone on the net is a jerkass. You may just be seriously unlucky or on the wrong corner of the net.

"The only reason you have and Xbox is because your parents don't love you enough to talk to you"
I can't remember if someone said that to me or if I said that...

Somebody's going to be offended in about anything a person could say. So, I figure it's really better to simply be honest.

Ah, what a monster I have become. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.128903?page=9#2783623]

I think I need to work on my tact.

The comments one reads on the internet make me seem sane and optimistic by comparison. It also makes me seem sane and forgiving. Or possibly even sane and accepting of my own faults. In reality, of course, I consider myself insane, paranoid, insane, vengeful, insane, and arrogant. And insane.

Though that's probably just because I'm lonely as a result of my mother not loving me and my dad leaving because his kids weren't worth it. Also, questioning my sexuality and trying to figure out whether I'm black or white. I'm also a hermaphrodite. So, in my defence, I think I should be allowed a little leg-room.*

*I saw another thread where someone made a joke and was subsequently told they needed to say it was a joke. Therefore, I'd like to assure people that no one considers me sane.

I once got told by a whole thread of people that I was a horrible slut because I had cold feet before my wedding.

Everyone's a genius on the internet. I make a policy of never saying something on here that I wouldn't voice in real life. ... I'm a bit loud mouthed in real life.

I think that if someone is rude to you on the internet, then it is best just to let it go.

I think that their comments are more a reflection of their own maturity and attitude and have very little to do with me.

Plus people tend to be nice to me on the internet. Real life on the other hand...

How come people feel that they can say anything on the internet? people send me rude comments all the time. i wish there was a way i could reach through the screen and break their teeth. because i will tell you now if people talk to me in real life like they do on the internet they are in for an ass whoopin. so what is the absolute WORST comment on the web that you have received?
Anonymity + no repercussions for their words = asshole

The general populace is pretty cool, only those select few feel the need to be a jerk and say what would get them a can of whoopass on themselves for what they said in real life. In general, people are pretty nice to me, I don't take a lot of crap though, I can easily shoot it back their way so people learn I don't sit there and take it, and I guess that just makes them not want to deal with someone who fires back. But the WORST comment I have ever received is from a guy who I accidentally pissed off on an IM, I was on a forum site at the time and he posted his rant on how big an idiot I was on what I'd said for everyone to see. It damaged me a bit because people thought a lot less of me then so I lost a few "friends" over that crap, but in the end me and him ended up talking it over and getting over it, those "friends" never came back, but I gained some pretty good ones.

So yeah, that was the worst comment I'd ever received. Oh wait, the second one goes to my dad's girlfriend's oldest daughter who once called me an "animu fag", I presume she meant anime fag because, uh, I like anime? I guess that automatically makes me gay? I suppose we'll ignore my girlfriend and my general interest in the female sex entirely and base it all on the fact I enjoy cartoons from a foreign land.

It wasn't that bad a comment, it was just the second worst I'd ever received, like I said, people tend to not give me much crap, which is good, cause I try not to give it either.
