Mainstream is annoying because it's good to be different. Saying you like Halo is nothing special because everyone else likes Halo (for some reason) and therefore is uninteresting. Saying you like an obscure game like Beyond Good & Evil which no one has ever heard of is therefore more likely to spark interest in to person you mentioned your interests to (like "Oh really? What's that about?" instead of "Oh Halo, yeah everyone plays that."). It's good to be different, but not hating something BECAUSE it's mainstream. It's also not a bad thing to have things that aren't mainstream going mainstream, which is what a lot of people hate. I think that if something you like becomes mainstream, then it's better because now more people know what it is and if more people liked Dark Tranquility instead of Flo Rida, I think that we can come one step closer to becoming a peaceful society.
I hate to quote Yahtzee, but sometimes popular things are popular for a reason. There's no reason to hate on Gears of War because everyone likes it. If you didn't like the gameplay or way that it was presented is one thing, but hating it because everyone else likes it is very dumb and closed minded. It's like that one kid that everyone knew that said that they didn't like pie even though they do but just wanted to sound creative or something.

You forget that the lands of mainstream games (with GTAIV, Halo and Gears as country's to put it figuaratively) are ruled by 12 year-olds or adult people with enough brain damage to be the equivalent of one...
I have to agree with you. I like Gears of War 2's online, but hate the community. Sometimes you'll find someone that's intelligent, but most of the time it's "OH MY GOD ****** I JUST RAPED YOU" (obviously not understanding what the words "******" and "rape" mean) so that's why I mostly play without a headset. At least the only thing bad about the Gears online is the headset chatter, unlike Halo where they just screw around and don't help the team or anything. I own Left 4 Dead for the PC so I was used to teamwork. I was talking to a friend who said he didn't like Left 4 Dead and he had it for the 360. He was talking about how if you join an expert game, it was just a bunch of kids running around and shooting each other and the laughing into the headset.
