I was wondering if there was anyone out there who played the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games? anyone at all? What are your thoughts on them and do you like them?

Not me, but my brother loves them. I think our gateway was Rise of the Phoenix, a similar type of game set in a different era on the SNES. Always a fan of turn-based strategy games like FFT or Advance Wars, he liked the fact that officers and rulers could be discharged and recruited by any side regardless of how the actual story of the Three Kingdoms went. He even watched the anime of it.

He has like 4 of the games I think, including the 11th which I believe was the last. Given how close together the releases were and how little changes between games except the mechanics, I might chalk it down as textbook Land Before Time syndrome.

I played... I think it was the tenth game? I really liked the sandbox rpg type thing of letting you be a random free officer and work your way up through the ranks of any of the factions or creating your own. I left it after completing it once though, because after that it mostly just seemed like a grind. Receive orders -> Go to location -> Select required menu option -> Report success -> Receive orders -> etc. There was the occasional battle which was interesting, but 90% of the game was just selecting the same few menu options over and over again.

From what I gather the games which only allow you to play as faction leaders are much better in terms of actual gameplay and depth, but I'm less interested in those unfortunately. For that sort of thing I go to Crusader Kings 2, which could really do with a ROTK mod come to think of it.

Plus it doesn't help that half of the games are PS2 only, or are missing expansions available only in Japan.

I had two and three on the Genesis, but never played them. Bought them from a garage sale for cheap, and ended up reselling them for $30 a piece. Felt good.

Played ROTT XI (sadly without expansion pack..) and it's my only taste of the series so far.

I quite liked it and wish I had a chance to play more of the series, the game was a bit of a drag when you had a bigger empire and had tons of cities to repeat the same actions with..

But it was soo much fun making chinese warrior versions of my friends, making a custom faction, having war councils with my chosen officers (along with a complex hierarchy of ranks and titles to give them with) and yeh was a unique enough experience overall, left me wanting for more.

I wonder, are there any free to download versions of the XI game? I have been interested in playing this game for a while.

I've played many RotK games, back from the NES.

And Nobunaga's Ambition.

My favorite RotK is X as it encapsulates a lot of the classic style.

XI is pretty good, but more streamlined. No free officer mode, and it's a bit more RTS.

Sadly they just don't make them anymore.

Played 8 and 11. Had a lot of fun with both.

My 8 favourite start point is as a Dong Zhou officer because I find it awesomely fun when you ascend high enough to be put in charge of Hu Lao Gate (highest rated structure in the game), and than have to defend it against the massive alliance attacks (which involve the gamey tactic of destroying the enemies vanguard before reinforcements can arrive).

Favourite start point in 11 (in the scenario right after Dong's death) was in the free city to the east of Zhang Lu with a Created Leader, his wife, and a single officer. You're actually safe for a time so you can concentrate solely on Zhang Lu who has the rotten luck of being constantly attacked from three sides...than when you take him out and hire as many of his below average officers you than have to handle constant Liu Zhang+Ma Teng AND attacks from Liu Biao + Li Jue/Cao Cao/Yuan Shu...its fun trying to keep two cities with mediocre officers against constant attacks from every direction.

All in all fun games which depending on the number you pick have different styles to them. A game that was pushed properly and had both styles of play would be what I'd like to see...but that won't happen.

The games were good but they have a fairly steep learning curve. I never tried them on console, in fact Ive only ever played the early PC versions (RotTK 3 I think). Given the complexity of the interface Id imagine it must be pretty clunky using a controller.
