Yeah, they tried to update the show's setting and look while keeping the campy feel of the original Star Trek series. It just didn't work. It wasn't until the characters started taking on a life of their own that the series really took off.
The only reason to watch season one in my opinion is in terms of introduction to the characters and plots that are continued.
This is not to imply that later shows are flawless. After all, the character Wesley Crusher was the inspiration of a new class of "Mary Sue" writing.
