Yeah I've played it before, while it is meh at best it doesn't really warrant the hate it gets. Which I'd say is due to the usual hardcore vs casual crap or plain old hating whatever is popular.

I have. Played it for about 2 days, tried getting into it, then realised it was a peice of shit. I honestly don't get what all the hype is about. Why not just play Farm Tycoon or something instead? If I remember correctly, you can do a LOT more on that then FarmVille. Plus, three quaters of the people who play it I'm guessing, aren't farmers. The other percentage of the hate just want to go along with everyone else.
Those games are timesinks, I already have plenty of those on my PC. I like the Geo Challenge and Traveler IQ Challenge games. I'm a big fan of geography and you really can't get games like those anywhere else, so Facebook does have a few gems out there for the niche markets.
I tried it, but the spam and the fact that I kind of hate Facebook in general put me off. Plus the ticking clock going 'if you don't come back here and do this within X hours all the stuff you just planted will die' was too overtly manipulative for me.
Bear in mind this is coming from a Sims addict who's happily played at least two families whose entire income was based on gardening. And I've played time management sims like Farm Frenzy on purpose. My boredom threshold is pretty high. I still thought Farmville was a bit boring.

I've played it. Unfortunately. It can hardly be called a game, seriously. All I did was move my retarded character, with the head size of Jupiter, around then wait 400 hours. Only to get pummeled by spam and be told that I suck because I don't have any friends to add as neighbors.
I mean jesus. People must have absolutely nothing to do if they play that. I would rather play with some three year olds in a sandbox and have them stuff my mouth with sand and gravel then to play Farmville again.

There's a reason many people have renamed facebook Spambook. I find that to be the biggest hit against it. It'd be different if it didn't have worthless, "you gotta' do this and bug your friends! Your friends decided to bug you too!"
Playing it assumes one is connected to the internet. Surely playing Pandemic 2 or Asteroids or any other flash game is more fun and constructive than anything on facebook? Surely people enjoy facebook desktop defense? Surely if one wanted to waste time on FB they'd play something actually fun like DD.

I played it quite a long time, because I was in a situation where there was not much else to do...then I read the cracked article how such games keep you playing. I quit cold turkey and never looked back.
I did try it actually. And I didn't like it. At all.
And after I tried it I was getting spammed off my ass for crap, so I just quit facebook. I could have turned the spamming off, but I didn't know how. And besides, facebook itself I didn't like that much, so I have no reason to go back to something I don't care for.

I played it for a few weeks after a friend introduced me to it. Got addicted as I always manage to do, then just stopped playing because I realised that it just wasn't fun.
