In wow, they'd have to guess both your username and password, so that may get a little difficult. It's more likely a keylogger or Trojan downloaded onto your computer.
Exactly what happened to me. Just got the email 10 minutes after I made the thread. Apparently I got Trojan'd or Keylogged, and then the shit hit the fan.

One day after I renewed my account after a 1 year Hiatus, no less.
What did the email say?

My XBL was hacked once, he made my avatar dressed differently. (Normally I wear Altiar's outfit, he changed it to Ezio) Oh the horror...[HEADING=2]THE HORROR[/HEADING]

Um... Something along the lines of "The computer in which this account was last played on has a keylogger/trojan. We have temporarily suspended the account for 24 hours, and initiated a password reset."

Did I mention the hacker got me suspended for 3 hours, as well?

Not a WoW account (since I don't play it) but I did have my entire computer hacked and destroyed about 2 years ago.

Fucking assholes, man. Probably some prick from 4chan.

My steam account got hacked twice. First time I think someone guessed my password....second time my little brother clicked on a phishing link. Thankgod I got it back both times, so many games on there.

Ok, never mind, I thought it was an email telling you that your account got hacked and you need to give a website your username and password. Just make sure to use whatever antivirus software you use to get the trojan off ass soon as possible.

Never. I played WoW for 5 years.

Then again... I do a few things personally that make it a little difficult for a hacker to get into my account.
same here I have an authenticator plus a strong password as well as a good internet security suite and never click on emails that look suspect

Nah, I'd never fall for that.

Except for one time, 3 years ago...

I did. In WoW. I had stopped playing for about 4 months then I got an e-mail saying I had been banned. Turns out someone hacked my account a month after my subscription ran out and used it to gold farm. I had to go through about 5 different departments for things like getting unbanned and having my stuff restored. They continually said the account was a fixed but I still had the ban on, even though they said it was lifted. Eventually I just gave up and stopped trying, turning the other games instead.

I don't have an authenticator. What I do have is a strong password, an e-mail address I use exclusively for WoW (which means I never check it), only one computer that I play on (which means my e-mail address never gets typed into the WoW game), and I jumble my passwords like crazy. My password for that e-mail account is not the same as the one I used on my WoW account, even though both have the same "username". I am also notoriously paranoid about sites I visit and I don't download porn or go to any porn sites ever.

Stuff like that. I feel pretty safe. :)

I had my steam account phished by a fellow escapist whose steam account had just been hacked. The hilarious part was the hacker tried to phish my account by linking to a fake steam community site, except they did it from the steam chat window, so I got a pop up window saying I was going to a non-steam site when I followed the link.

Nope, I never have. Then again, I don't play online games much any more.
