Have you ever avoided something because of its fanbase?

Every fan base has less than favorable people among its ranks. Saying you avoid anime because of Otakus is like saying you avoid gaming because of twelve year old douchebags online, or saying you avoid reading because of over-obsessed Twilight fans. Sorry, but I don't buy the fanbase as a reason not to like something.

So, I'm curious, is there some other reason you are against getting into anime?

umm....Anime killed my dog?....

what other reason would there be?

no no, well actually I really don't like some of the artstyles...usually the more outlandish big-eyed random coloured hair type stuff,

I am well aware of how strange/hypocritical it may be..(I mean Talimancers anyone?..hurrrk) but its just this weird..almost gag reflex thing I have with "certain aspects" of the whole anime thing....and in a way (this is going to sound silly) If I start getting into anime its like crossing some sort of "weirdo" line

that said I have a whole list of Anime films I want to watch...and some Anime I actually really love

its just I prefer this

I don't know, it's why I asked. My point was that not liking something because of the fanbase is a petty weak reason not to like something. I was just curious if there was something else. I had a friend who didn't like anime because, as an animation student, he couldn't stand most animes cutting corners (characters only moving their mouths while talking, and not much else going on in the scene).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to suggest you have to love every anime in existence. Hell, I consider myself to be a fan of anime and I pretty much only stick to the most basic stuff (DBZ, FMA, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Gundam, etc...) and there is a lot of stuff I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It's the same as there are plenty of games I really don't like.

Basically what I'm trying to say is don't let how other people act determine what you may or may not enjoy. I know it's not always easy: try being a guy who is legitimately into chick-flicks, and having so many people tell you "oh you only like them because you're trying to get into girl's pants" or "You like chick flicks... what are you? Gay?!" I'm sure you get a lot of similar comments being a female who is into video games (forgive me if I'm assuming too much).

I think those pictures sum up exactly what's wrong with anime and its fanbase. The hardcore fans of anime love all things that are animated in Japan, including that second picture. A lot of it ends up being rather voyeuristic, so a strong creeper vibe starts to form around those who just watch anime.

I personally have nothing against anime, but after watching a show as amazing as Full Metal Alchemist, I had to take a break so as to not sully that memory. I then started to realize that a lot of the animes I had been recommended where more like that second picture than the first, so I've almost completely separated myself from it.

I'll just leave this here in closing...

Because, I know people are capable of liking something too much, and this is what can happen if it's anime.

oh yeah! thats also another reason...don't get me wrong I actually think the asthetic somtimes can look really gorgeous...but yeah, lack of flow comapred to western animation

actually part of the reason of sticking to movies....at least you assume theres gonna be less cost cutting

"My Little Pony", "Glee" and Sonic (I used to like the games but after I got older and saw the rest of the fanbase I edged away)

Halo after the first game alot of people jumped on the band wagon and declared it the best game but it just seemed like a shoddy FPS game from microsoft who taking a leaf from George Lucas began milking the series for everything its worth.

Nowadays PC Gaming.

I use to sort of jump between the two, but the minute I became aware of PC Gamer Elitism I got the hell out of there. You might find more frat boys on XBLA but at least they won't be sanctimonious pricks with an overinflated sense of their self worth just because they happen to like a different mode of gaming.

Also Valve. I hate Valve, I hate their fanboys, I hate their games, and I hate the way that they have somehow deluded so many gamers into thinking that they aren't a company in this business to make money. If you genuinely think Valve are 'just in it to make videogames' grow up and get some sense.

I'll be honest and say that up until the Steam summer sale, I had avoided Skyrim like the plague due to the more rabid portion of its fan-base.

Now that the whole "arrow to the knee" (What about "sword to the chest"? Isn't that also worthy of being a shitty meme?) business is largely over and done with, I feel good enough about playing the game without feeling like I have something in common with the people that go around the internet typing "FUS ROH DAH!" and the like in all caps for no reason.

Unlike them, I'll say that Skyrim is an okay game but not worth playing without mods.

Also, hip hop, Glee and any DOTA-type game. Oh, and My Little Pony. I have one mate who's into it, but he's the only "brony" I'll gladly have as a friend.

A lot of popular game franchises have fans I don't want to associate with. (Skyrim comes to mind when the fans obsess over it moreso than the rest of the series) The more a fanbase endlessly talks about something the more I get turned off from it.
This guy knows what I'm talking about.

I have never played a Halo game or read a Halo novel. Not because it doesn't sound cool, and not because I think I won't enjoy it, but because my first encounter w/ it was @ my first duty station after joining the Army. It was a combat engineer unit and there were exactly 3 females (including me) in the entire BN. To a man, the f***wads who gave me shit about being a girl and got pissy when I beat them on a run or similar, played Halo. They also said "brah" all the time, even though they weren't Hawaiian and stared at me like an idiot if I ever spoke a word of pidgin.

I know it sucks of me, and maybe I'm being as biased and pigheaded as they were, but I can never bring myself to play the games or associate w/ the professed hardcore fans b/c I can't stand the thought that I'd be in the company of or associated w/ people like that.

I stay away from the Halo series because of the fanbase. They keep trying to claim that Halo is the best FPS ever, and when I play it, it really doesn't seem like anything special. Not bad, mind you, just not as good as everyone puffs it up to be.

I stay away from something due to a fanbase only if I have to interact with that fanbase. I avoid multiplayer in shooters and even some mmos due to how "infamous" some communities and fanbases can be. I don't avoid them to not be associated with them. I avoid them because I don't want to bother with the people.

I used to watch anime a lot, but some members of its fan base made me lose interest. Mainly it was due to a cruel ex who was really into it. They were at anime club in college so I stopped going after we broke up. Also seeing 20 year olds run around shouting 'pocky' and acting like hyper children (I didn't even act that way when I was 8), made me continue to lose interest in anime. (Seeing the same tropes play out was leading to burnout anyway) It was only recently that I've been watching shows again.

I also don't care about Harry Potter. It just doesn't interest me, but the fanbase and hype machine made me go from disinterest to strong dislike. For some reason, many people can't handle me not caring about it. They insist that I should at least watch all the movies or read up through the darker books. My reading list is comprised of nonfiction history books or novels that challenge me in their complexity ie House of Leaves or Song of Fire and Ice. Yet for some reason it is considered almost taboo to say HP just doesn't interest me. I even had people in their 40s who aren't nerds get really bent out of shape over that.

I had no interest in MLP to begin with. Of course, many of the so-called Bronies I've had the "pleasure" of talking to were at best unpleasantly smug and at worst hostile, prejudicial, and downright rude. Ironic, how they want everyone to tolerate them yet can't bring themselves to tolerate others.

Now, I'm not saying all people who watch MLP are like this, that would be ridiculous. I'm just saying most of the ones I've seen are.

And that, my friends, is why I have no interest in MLP.
