Have you ever bought a game you knew nothing about and upon playing it found it to be AWESOME?

Let's see, Persona 3 (I know knew the music was awesome), Ar Tonelico, Fire Emblem, Mana Khemlia, Metal Gear Solid (Knew it had cardboard boxes), and I rented Tales Of Symphonia without knowing anything about it.

I think my whole gaming collection was like that...

Sonic I picked out of all the other games I was offered, Jak and Daxter, the first one, I picked as the one game I was allowed to have when I bought my Ps2, BioShock I got even after my brother torn it in half with hatred, Batman: Arkham Asylum I bought when I just saw the GotY edition... umm, Section 8, Killing Floor, etc etc, maybe I just have low standards but, I love every game I get, or maybe I'm just really lucky and pick out high quality games every time.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I had actually thought I bought Jedi Knight Academy (which was also really fun). What a pleasant mistake =D

Although I still think Pazaak is stupid D=

Persona 3.

I remember looking at the game cover and thought:

"That looks badass."

I haven't regret that purchase until today.

for me, the elder scrolls oblivion. when it came out, i was a kingdom hearts fanboy (another game i just thought looked cool and wound up beating a dozen times), and all i knew about it was that it beat KH 2 in the G4ia RPG of the year election by 20 votes. made me hate the game, i thought it looked stupid (first person lame ass swishy swishy swordplay? laaame!). few years later, my friend has a copy, tells me how fun console commands are to dick around. i kinda forgot everything i knew about the game besides hearing it was damn good, so he let me Download it on my computer via steam (wouldnt work on his). this was about a month ago, i have logged a good 100 hours on it, and haven't even dipped into the DLC yet (he had GOTY edition, so i got a sweet deal).

one of the best buys i made.

yeah, pazaak is kind of silly. its just fancy blackjack. as for me, i picked it up when i heard about it being mentioned on many best RPGs ever lists, and i heard SWTOR was coming out. figured i would just give the source material a shot, and it was fun as hell.

Grim Fandango.
Seconded! Grim Fandango was the first adventure game that I was compelled enough to finish, despite the hours of frustration I experienced trying to get those damn bees to riot (I swore I had done everything!).

When I was 11 or 12 years old, after a regular haircut at my local barber's, I found a copy of a PC game I had never heard of: Deus. It was the first 3D game I had ever played, and it would be my favorite until I played Duke Nukem a few months later. Looking back, I was pretty confused for most of the first half of the game, but I really fell in love with it later (but again, I was 11 or 12, so awesome was a lot easier to come by back then).

A few years later, my parents had signed me up for some sort of subscription where I would occasionally receive PC game demos (not too clear on the details, though). The two games I remember playing were Jedi Knight: Dark Forces and Twinsen's Odyssey (a.k.a. Little Big Adventure 2, but I didn't know it was a sequel back then). As much as I loved playing a Jedi in Dark Forces, I couldn't get enough of Twinsen's Odyssey.

For me, the best "awesome game I never heard of" was the one that made me start seeking out those obscure titles for the PS2: ICO. I only heard about it from a friend of a friend, and decided to check it out. It had fun environmental puzzles, minimal dialog, and I didn't dread the whole escort mission aspect (which I don't think I've experienced since).

OH MY GOD I CANNOT BELEIVE I FORGOT THIS ONE!!!!

i remember i saw a review of Rise of Legends on G4 waaaaaaaaaay back. a couple years later my brother learned about torrents and i figured i would look for this game since i could try it for free. i couldn't remember the name however, so though my search of g4's rts review list, i saw warhammer 40k dawn of war and saw the chaos defiler in the picture. thinking it was the same giant crab robot i figured this was the game i was looking for.

thanks to that mistake, i have purchased and beaten dawn of war 1 and all expansions besides soulstorm. beaten all of dawn of war 2 and expansions, and currently own a tau army for the tabletop game that is somewhere between 500 and 1250 points. (just got it a couple days ago, havent calculated points since im busy building it)

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga

I was in the mood for a good SRPG... It wasn't one. It was still a funky ass ride, and one of my favorite DS games to date.

I'm also gonna second Persona 3. It was mostly an impulse buy, I did know it was a JRPG with dating sim aspects but not much more. Cue to a week later when I emerged from my basement, having cleared the game which I still consider one of my top 3.

Heroes III, I was about 10 years old and I saw a picture of an archangel weilding his fire sword with a sky and clouds background and on top of it it said Heroes III and I thought "that has to be awsome", I remember a friend asking me "but do you at least know anything about it?", and all I could say was "no", I took it home, tried it, didn´t understand any of it at first until I got the hang of it, and man did my recklessnes pay of, I still play it to this day in wich we live in the 4 hour long videogame era.

Also Resident Evil, it was the first videogame I ever got, literally, I also got killed by the first zombie you encounter but let me tell that didn´t stop me, you could say I started from the very bottom on that game.

Viva Pinata - Kids Game, heck no, way to much thinking!

Okami - Just wonderful all around

Harvest Moon - Who would've thought the most hours in a game right here.

Mount and Blade - Horse mounted combat at it's best, graphics suck, and the women have no armor, but hey, it plays great.

Most games I play. I have no idea comming into it and simply read the back of the case or liking the box art. Until I found the internet I just went on what I thought I'd like. Now I research most games. But still, some can be surprising.

The whole Legacy Of Kain series in some bargain bin when I was 13, now it's my favorite game series of all time.
Also Evil Twin, I didn't know anything about it but I was amazed.

Tales of Vesperia. I was in an RPG mood, so I was looking around for cheap 360 RPGs. For some reason this one caught my eye. Many hours have been put into it and I'm still working on a 100% playthrough.

Shenmue - was buying a Dreamcast and the offer at the time allowed me a free game from a choice of a few. The others didn't really look intriguing so I picked Shenmue which I had never previously heard of. To this day it remains my favourite ever game.

Morrowind - exactly the same story but this time I was buying the original Xbox for the first time, I was amazed at the scope of the game within 5 minutes of playing it.

Planetside - Had a free trial offer from a PC gaming magazine I regularly bought. Installed it and gave it a shot, was blown away and immediately bought the full game and set up an account. For those of you that haven't heard of it, its an FPS MMO which manages large scale battles with hundreds of players, tanks, aircraft almost flawlessly and lag free. A sequel is in development too!

Portal & TF2

Portal: Knew nothing beyong flashy portals, oooh. It (and it's sequel) are now my two most favouritest games in the whole wide world.

TF2: Got it during the "free to play" bonanza, and i have to say, once i played it AND got the hang of it (which was surprisingly easy), i can't look at any other multiplayer game the same way... apart from assassins creed. But that's a different kettle of fish.

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. Before I bought the game I had only seen one picture of it in a game-magazine. Back then, I only had one PSP game, so I thought I could take a look at that game. Todayit remains as one of my favite games.
