Have you ever bought a game you knew nothing about and upon playing it found it to be AWESOME?

I didn't know much about some indie games called Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves The World except that they were RPGs,but they were bundled for $2 on Steam so I bought them. They are pretty damn good. (Didn't play Breath of Death VII yet,and I just reached the first town on Cthulhu Saves The World, but I can gather a feel for the games in that bit of time.)

I can't really say I have. I've either bought them because of the precursors in their respective franchises, or I have bought them after research. Usually whim buys are failures or mediocre for me.

Mass Effect 1, I had no idea what it was about, but it looked interesting, got it for SUPER CHEAP, like an eight the price of a normal game here, I invested[footnote][footnote]I am in love with footnotes today.[/footnote]Not wasted, or even just used, invested.[/footnote] so much time in that game it is not even funny.

I don't know if Phoenix Wright would count for me or not. I saw those Phoenix Wrong Flash animations and thought they were pretty funny. Then, I tried out a quick demo of Apollo Justice (because for some reason, Capcom put that online. /:[ ) I understood what I was supposed to be doing, so I went out and got my first Ace Attorney game. It was pretty awesome, despite it being considered probably the weakest in the series (Justice for All).

I guess Sam & Max Season 1 also counts. I didn't actually know much about Sam & Max other than they were a dog and rabbity-creature who... did stuff. I wanted to try out Season 1, and it was pretty damn funny. Episodes 2 and 3 were kinda weak, but... "War. Oh, what is it good for? It's good for you; it's good for me." Yeah... :)

Back when I was 13, I played FFVII for the first time.

I was shocked at how good the game was, and it was what really started me on the way to becoming a gamer.

Oblivion. What a FRIGGIN AWESOME surprise that was. I bought my ps3 and had a choice between Oblivion and Motorstorm, and took a chance with TES IV :p

Kingdom hearts.

Was my first console game as a child along with FFX, and I loved both of them to bits. KH holds a special place to this day however.

Fallout 3, thought it would be just a linear generic shooter.

Company of Heroes also surprised me a lot, specially because it's a 2006 game but still manage to put a lot of current RTS on the ground.

Procured Final Fantasy XII from my sister and mind you the only FF games I've ever played were I & II on the GBA. The story was something out of Star Wars, the license system was complex, but in a good way, and the grinding was kinda fun imo.

When I was young I lived in the country (and do during summers) I bought golden sun on a whim. Since I live(d) in the country not many people played video games, so it was sort of a stab in the dark. It is now one of my favorite games ever.

This also happened to me and crystalis on the game boy color. Also Star Ocean the last hope. Actually come to think of it I bought a lot of games on a whim haha. I know there are more.

Crackdown
Team Fortress 2
Devil May Cry
Fallout 3
Bioshock
Dragon Age: Origins
Oblivion
Red Dead Redemption (new favorite game)

...I've gambled a lot and have only missed the mark a few times.

Most recently, Hydrophobia: Prophecy. It was on sale on Steam, and the description sounded interesting, so I bought it. A bit short, a bit buggy, but incredibly fun.

A while ago, The World Ends With You. All I knew about it was what was on the box (including the fact that Tetsuya Nomura was involved somehow). It's probably my favourite game ever.

Transformers War for Cybertron, easily the best game of that year and the best shooter since CoD 4.

I found Killzone 1 in Cashconverters (UK pawnshop basically), since it was cheap and how it had loads of hype at release, now, I own all the Killzone games in some form (thank you Sony for putting KZ:Liberation in the WB Package and completing my collection ^_^)

Another one I have to mention is TW:Shogun 1 that I found among the stand in a shop that has a reasonable amount of £5 PC games, that game is definitely my favourite RTS of all time

Final Fantasy X, I had wanted an X-box and my parents bought a PS2 thinking my younger sister would use it more than myself. I picked up X because it looked pretty and loved it. KOTOR was another one, my brother gave me his old X box and games upon my graduation. He didn't realize what he bought when he got KOTOR, thank goodness he did buy it though for me.
