Have you ever bought a game you knew nothing about and upon playing it found it to be AWESOME?

Star Ocean 3 for ps2. Bought it for 3 bucks at a garage sale, played it for 3 hours and thought it was crap, decided to stay with it for a little bit longer. 160 hours later I still have not beat the end game bosses, the game became extremely addictive 12 hours in. After the main story there are 4 extra "dungeons" that will rape you non-stop.

Main story boss hit-points: 400,000

After main story final boss: 60,000,000

Good Luck!

Painkiller. Well, technically I didn't BUY it per se. It was given to me by a friend. I played it and I freaking loved it.

I didn't know anything about it though and mind you, I was pretty into gaming then as well so I'm surprised I didn't hear about it.

The Witcher.

Heard an aquiantence say that it was an awesome RPG from a polish company and that it featured a lot of schemeing and backstabbing politics.

That sounded very interesting so when the amazing boxart caught my eye at the store i thought "Why not?" and bought it.

One of my favourite RPG's ever.

I bought the first dead space without any real experience of the game in general. Two weeks later I was on my second play through trying to get all the weapon achievements.

Goldun Sun for the Gameboy Advance. A week after Christmas, I wanted a game for my GBA I got for Christmas (me and my brother were sharing a copy of Mario Kart atm). So I'm at Zellers looking through the shelf for a good game worth my Christmas money. Goldun Sun caught my eye, but I knew nothing about it, so we asked a staff member to open the glass so I could read the back. After seeing it was an RPG and convincing myself it was worth it.

I was right, it was awesome. Probably the best GBA game I've ever played, and one of my favorite RPGs.
My Golden Sun story is actually that a friend down the road had the first one and showed it to me briefly (only very briefly) and when I next went down the street I accidentally bought GS:TLA. I don't regret a thing.

OT: FFX was a great game. Golden Sun: The Lost Age technically counts. But FFX-2 taught me to always do my research first.

Xenosaga.
Picked it up from a pawn shop. Did not put it down for three weeks. Of both play and replay.

My sister brought me Psychonauts for Christmas one time, after I couldn't decide what I wanted.

Twas a wise purchase.

Basically was my case with Oblivion.

I knew jack shit about it. Hell, I thought it was an MMO the first time I overheard people talking about it.
Yeah, prety much the same for me. My brother bought it for the hell of it when he got his PS3 along with Motorstorm and Resistance, and we ended up playing it 10x more than both of the other games combined.

OT: The closest I've come to doing that myself is way back on PS2 I saw a game demo called The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Assuming it to be a total shit-pile like the Hulk game before it, I dismissed it for several months.
When I did finally pop the demo in again (to play something that wasn't Hulk-related) I decided to give it a whirl and I was quickly suckered in to buying it the very same day.
It still remains one of my favorite games of all time. If you can think of [Prototype] (made by the same guys), it's that but with the Hulk and tem times more fun because the story properly reflects the gameplay.

Final Fantasy IX my first RPG ever. It also started my full time commitment to videogames. Nowadays I'd never buy a game without doing the proper research, thats just too much money to be taking a gamble on.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. All I heard about it was that it was good, and I picked it up for cheap in 2005. I was not disappointed.

Game called Navel Ops for PS2. Years ago I got it and it was awesome sauce. The sequel sucked though, luckily I'd only rented it out to try it.
