Fallout 3, Age of Empires and WorldShift.

Infamous My Favourite game of ALL TIME.

Civilization 4, The Command and Conquer games, The Movies (My other favourite game, it was so good I bought it twice).

Practically all my favourite and best games I bought because they were massively on sale or on a whim.

That's actually how I bought all my games from the ages 5-13. Sooo....

Ratchet and Clank 3
Final Fantasy 9
Fallout 3
GTA 3
the Sims

And those are just the highlights.

The game was Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. I found it used at a Gamestop for $15 (this was before it grew in popularity in the US, or the release of Disgaea 2.) The only reason I bought it was because I liked the cover art, and now, it's one of my favorite game series.

I had something like that once. I got a game for my birthday one year, Final Fantasy X. At the time, I'd never played Final Fantasy and barely knew anything of the series let alone this one. Since then I've played just about every one of the FF games other than the DS exclusives and the MMO's. A more recent example was when PSN went down and they offered InFamous for free. I'd never heard of it before, and based on the description assumed it was going to be some modern fantasy game, and you'd be like that guy from the Sorcerer's Apprentice movie. Then I was introduced to Cole McGraw (sort of, I didn't even learn his full name until I'd played the game for a couple days), and went "Holy Shit, this is FUCKIN AWESOME!".

Wizardry for the PS2. I had $20 and in Gamestop with a friend, and had no intention on getting a game that day. While waiting for my friend I browsed the used game section; it just stuck out and it was cheap. my 2 days off from work were 90% playing that game over and over again.

EDIT: Within the Past year (13 months ago exact) A fellow employee (store manager at the time) walked up to me and asked if i like RPGs and if i had an Xbox 360. Of course i said yes... later that shift he handed me Mass effect 1 and said it'd be up my alley. Oddly enough i never heard of it before hand But I play it till i beat it ever three month since (and as soon as i could i went out and got ME2, and pre-ordering ME3)...

Hmm, difficult question. I have two candidates:

Bloodrayne: I stumbled upon it in a sale bin for 2.50?, and bought it solely on the premise: dirt cheasp, scantily leather clad vampire on the cover. It turned out to be a surprisingly fun game for that price.

Uncharted 2: A year ago, when I bought my PS3, I thought of the Uncharted series as kind of a fratboy version of tombraider without boobs (even if that sounds very paradox), so I never bothered with reading reviews. Saw it on sale, bought it, and fell in love with the characters and gameplay.

Link's Awakening, man. Bought a gameboy when I was a kid, got it for free as part of the package, promptly forgot about it. Found it again a couple months later, tried it out. Mind = blown.

Few years back: was browsing games, and found a game that was on sale. I had just enough cash on my person to get it. So I did... The game was "Tomba"... BEST. BUY. EVAR!

Few years back.. a used PS2 with Godhand. One of the most fun ps2 games I've ever played!

Recently - Terraria - I saw it at -75% (I know it wasn't a proper price so I paid the "saved" money to a charity, being the honest person that i am ~_~) and found it to be damn addictive.

Strangely, The Godfather 2. I bought it as part of a 2 for £20 deal with The orange box (It was that or a sports game, not much choice beyond what i already had) and really liked it!

Mass Effect 2... The first one i bought in the series..

I've always kinda hated sci-fi, and rgp games have not been a big interest either..
Also, it was my first Bioware title..

Just randomly picked it up for ps3 cause there was nothing else that fancied me at the time.
Did i ever get hooked?! My god that game is utterly fantastic.
Finished it 3 times now, also bought ME 1, have not finished that cause somehow it did not take to me as good as ME2..

Fable 1.
Bought it in a buy one get one free deal alongside Phantasy Star Online.
PSO lasted a day before I realised it was rubbish, but Fable saved the day.

.. and has been doing so ever since, I don't care what anyone else says. Fable 3 was a good game.

Yesterday, I bought a game that just came out on Steam called Dungeons of Dredmor. I haven't seen any reviews for it, or even heard of it beforehand. Pure impulse buy. I was expecting a decent rougelike, but it turned out to be very good. I love the humor and art style of the game, and the mechanics are pretty solid too.

I bought Disgaea and Persona 3 FES the same day. I didn't know anything about them, I just bought them because they looked neat.

They ended up becoming my favorite game series, and P3:FES became my favorite game of all time.

World of Warcraft.

The year was 2005. I was in the process of looking for something to play on my brand new PC which I'd built and my mate bought it for me (he bought a copy for 4 of us) and we ended up installing it and having one of the best (sober) LANs of all time. It didn't stop being awesome until after WotLK. :)
