Have you ever bought something because of a commercial?

Yes, at least as a child. These days I don't actually watch TV at all, so the answer is probably no. That said, I did start playing Eve because of a link on Ctrlaltdel-online years back, so I'm obvious vulnerable to the mind control lasers.

Come to think of it, food commercials always make food look so tasty and sexy. Im guilty of going out to eat at chilis simply because of the commercial.

Dare Iced Coffee. Now I'm hooked on the stuff. Must be laced with crack cocaine or something.

No way that stuff works
I actually might have believed it, but once they start lying in a commercial, I ain't buying.

He says he's gonna absorb some drink from a piece of carpet in real time, and spills the drink all over it, and then in the next shot all the liquid has been neatly pooled into the center of the carpet and the big puddle underneath has mysteriously dissapeard. At that point, even if it DID work, it's lost all credibility to me.

Plus some commercials are just so fucking STUPID or lame that they actually make me want to avoid the product. Pepto Bismol for example. Sorry Pepto, I'll take Gravol instead, because your commercials have annoyed me to the point where I don't want to give you any of my money.

I have bought things based on commercials, but those were just toys when I was a kid, and Wendy's Baconator. Yeah... I think that's pretty much it. Unless we're counting movies.

Ads are just ways to get the word out. The flashiness is just people being unproductively creative and the real beef is in the product itself.

Very much this.

For example, an ad for Halo Wars was just on. It might not make me go "ohh my god I want this now" but it made me go "ohh thats right, Halo Wars is out, I might check it out."

Yes. Vince is just such a darn good salesman. Plus it sells it self.
I loved his nuts.

I bought Mirror's Edge indirectly because of commercials. The commercials told me the game existed, so I looked it up and thought it looked pretty awesome, then I bought it later. Does that count?

Had I seen that commercial before it was all over Youtube, I would have on Oldspice right now. Bruce Campbell FTW.

I liked the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time commercial, so I went to the store and, on impulse, bought it instead of Sonic Heroes.

One of the better decisions I've made, as SoT was and still is my favourite game.

Partly, AD's mostly get muted in my household, but if it happens to be an AD for something I need, then I'll do a little research and if it happens to be a good bargin, then yes, I'll buy it.

Yes--or, at least, nothing about how advertising works. The purpose of advertising isn't to make you think "wow, I need that! I'm going to run right out and buy it!" (unless you're three years old, maybe, and then you have no money anyway). The purpose, instead, is so that you *remember* the company name when you *do* need the product/service they provide. This makes a big difference, it really does. If no one knows who you are or what you do, you aren't going to sell anything. If, instead, they've seen your logo a dozen times in conjunction with something interesting/amusing/attractive/whatever, then you're at least on their list of alternatives to choose from, which means they're orders of magnitude more likely to buy something from you.

Of course, you can go too far and do things like oversaturate your target audience or spend your advertising money on things that don't elicit much response. There's an entire field (marketing) devoted to analyzing and quantifying just such difficult and ephemeral results. While many of us are weary of advertising because a lot of companies go for a spam approach, we should be happy because it pays for a lot of things we'd otherwise have to pay for out of pocket, like broadcast radio and TV and most internet sites. And, hey, the next time we need a tow or want to order a pizza, we just might find something we like because we remembered an ad we saw.

I'd have to agree with you on this one.

I'm pretty sure anyone posting here who claims they're not influenced by advertising is ignorant or just completely naive (basically the same thing). Advertising on TV, internet, etc. is not about impulse buying, but about raising consumer awareness so that when a buyer does decide they want a given product/service the brand name is already in their mind.

To an extent, yes, but I don't blame you. Marketing is such a sneaky business and people have long since learned how to get under your skin and make you remember things. In fact research suggested subliminal messaging was so effective, it was banned from TV.

Edit: Finger slipped on the enter button.

As I was saying, adverts are simply there to show you a product. Business's know that they probably won't convince anyone to buy their product in thirty seconds or so. Find me someone who will and they are just so weak minded. Hell, pretending to use a jedi mind trick might work on them. With a product out in the open this means you may think of it then next time you need something. For eg cleaning products like toilet cleaner. There are plenty of brands to choose from, and if you able to afford a premium product then you are far more likely to buy on that sticks in your head. Try it now...Think of a brand of toilet roll...

For me, the first brand I think of is Andrex. They advertise far more often than any other. And If I felt like spending the extra money for decent bog roll, (which is usually always the case) I would probably buy Andrex. It's a name that i'm familiar with, and therefore can trust.

You'll notice car manufactures, mobile phone networks and electronics makers don't really advertise specific products anymore. For them, the market is so big that as long as they are the first brand that pops into peoples head they have already sold their product.

P.S No i don't work in marketing. I just don't like being conned :)
