My biggest one I think has to be, well...it's a bit of a story, in more of a 'one thing led to another' sense. All of it culminating in an enjoyment of Tokutatsu and J-drama. Of course it originally started with that wonderful series that most hyperactive 90s kids enjoyed: Power Rangers.
A few years back I was flipping through channels one day at about six in the morning as I was getting ready for work. Stopping on some family network for a moment, I saw a face, and more importantly, a voice that I knew I remembered, but for the life of me I couldn't remember where or why. Spiky hair, small beard, he seemed like any other b-film action-hero so I figured maybe I'd seen him in some crappy sci-fi channel film or something. When the spandex-covered grunts started mucking around their rubber-suited boss I figured it was whatever incarnation of Power Rangers was on this year. I didn't care so much about the series since I was beyond it to the point of mocking, but the guy's identity bugged me. Since they'd given his character a last name and it was apparently halfway through the show I sat down and kicked my feet up to laugh and hope to catch the end credits to see who the hell this man was and why I remembered him.
Aside from some surprising witty writing (the Bulk and Skull slapstick being noticeably absent), things went about as to be expected. Not much changes when you have something down to a science, essentially. It wasn't until I heard the remark of "Aren't you a little old for this TOMMY?!" that my eyes widened in shock. THAT was where I'd seen, and heard, the guy before! Suffice it to say my mind was blown, and it was vaguely entertaining enough for me to continue watching episodes in the mornings after. (Many jokes at Tommy's expense, as well as jokes on the obviousness of things like everyone just HAPPENING to wear their color in their civilian clothing.)
one thing led to another as I poked around and did some research. From Power Rangers, I found Super Sentai, from there I found Kamen Rider, and from there I found the other dramas and serieses that exist here on the glory of the interwebs. It's never horrendously deep or anything, but eh. I enjoy it and if nothing else it saves me from watching reality television.
