Have you ever done this?

Hello Escapists ive been wondering have any of you ever bought a game and after completing it bought the games before it (Example i bought halo 3 then 2 and 1 to see the story)i recently did this with crysis and im really enjoying it (Although controls for pc are quite weird).

If so what game did you do this with and why?

My brother bought Skate 3, decided to get the previous games 1 and 2, even though he only played them for 5 minutes.
I can't think of any others where I went backwards, I usually bought a game then the game after it.

No, but I have felt that I have missed something from the story if I just bought the sequel.

No, I just buy games if I think they got a good SP, if not I don't even look at'em.

Max Payne. I bought Max Payne 2 and liked it so much I went back and picked up Max Payne 1. I can't think of any others I've done this with.

The first game I played in the Splinter Cell series was the 3rd, Chaos Theory. It was also the first one I bought.

I then bought the first and second on account of its awesomeness.

And later the fourth and fifth, but those don't count.

I believe that to be the only instance I've done it though.

Sure, if I play a game that I like I'll probably go and play the others in the series. I'll try to play them in order though, if I play one of the sequels first I always feel like I'm missing something

I did that for the sly series but other than that no.

I do however if I intend to get into franchises(Assassins creed and Metal gear solid for example) start with the first game

I played Knights of the Old Republic II before buying and playing the first. Loved both.

I played Fable 2 first. Then went back and played the first one. Then 2 again, and realised 2 wasn't as good when you stack it up.

I played Syphon Filter 2 before I went and bought them all. I did play Half-Life before playing the second one, but it was a long time before, so I didn't remember any of it. Played System Shock 2, then went back and watched a playthrough of the first one. Same with Silent Hill 2. There's also a long list of games of which I played later titles, but never went back to play the earlier ones.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Grandia 2.
Ninja Gaiden 2.
And Resident Evils' 2/4 just to name a few.
I'd say Zelda: OoT, but I don't think Zelda counts for obvious reasons.

Oblivion. I played it, then bought morrowind.

I bought Diablo 1 well after playing through Diablo 2 several times. Never actually played it though. But I bought it. That was dumb.

The first game I played in the Splinter Cell series was the 3rd, Chaos Theory. It was also the first one I bought.

I kinda did it with Splinter Cell. I played the train-level demo of Pandora tomorrow and then bought the first Splinter Cell. I guess their marketing worked in more ways than they expected

Played Mass Effect 2 and loved it. Kind of a shock for me becuase I really wouldn't say I was a guns and spaceships kind of girl. So I went back and played Mass Effect 1 and now I'm playing through 2 again so I have all my decsions from the previous game.

I'm really looking forward to 3

Yes, I bought Devil May Cry 2 first, then 1, then 3. I also bought FFVII first, then VIII, then VI. Same with the Fallout series.

Played through Metal gear solid 4, loved it, then eventually, I bought Metal gear Solid, might soon get metal gear solid 2.

All I'll say is, thank goodness for downloadable/used games. Also, flea markets and yard sales are a godsend.

The first actual video game I recall ever playing was Marathon: Infinity (although I do recall Kid Pix and something about Roger Rabbit's house.. or something.. no. Fucking. Clue.) and when I was finally old enough to understand there was indeed a story, and not just me dying horribly on the first level over and over, I went back and played the first and second games.

I bought Battlefield Vietnam and loved it so much that I bought Battlefield 1942 to play with my BFV clan.

Turns out I was even better at BF1942 than I was at BFV.

Seems like so long ago...
