I've turned the music off for Dead Space before, but not because I thought it was bad or anything (in fact, I quite like the scores in the Dead Space games). I just wanted to see if having no music would make the game any scarier, since a lot of the time I'll fight a group of necromorphs and kill off all but one of them, and the action music will still be going on, thus alerting me to its presence and curtailing any scares that could have been had from having that last surviving necro jump at me out of nowhere. It actually worked to an extent, but I still like to leave the music on most of the time because it's so good.

Minecraft. That music is kind of depressing.

Also, I make a point of turning off the music in the recent Fallout games - it breaks my immersion. It makes having the radio feel more substantial.

ah excellent I'm not alone.

Ninja Gaiden 2. There's only 3, 4 tracks at maximum worth listening to.

The soundtracks to MvC3 and MK 2011 are also quite forgettable.
I'm going to assume you mean the current gen Ninja Gaiden 2
Yes, the one for the Xbox 360.

MvC3?

Zero's theme? Akuma's? Ryu's? Cap's? Task's? Wolverine's? Magneto's? Morrigan's?

All of those are amazing.
Zero's theme is pretty generic, even for his character.
Akuma's is straight, I'll admit.
Ryu's theme sounds like garbage; it starts off spastic and only gets worse. I'll take the original or the somewhat minimalistic sounds of Kobu [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq783yrNnZw] (Ryu's theme from SF3: Third Strike) any day.
Eh, Cap's is all right.
Taskmaster has a nice theme, except it doesn't fit someone like Taskmaster. :/
I'd like Wolvie's theme a lot better if not for this video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1edrkbZiekg]. I mean... I like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but come on. :p
Magneto? Eh...
Morrigan's theme sounds like it's lacking something, but I'm not really sure how. :?

But let's say everything you said is 100% true, that still only 8 out of 39 or so character themes. That's only, rough estimate, 1/5 of all the characters.

Slightly off topic but last year I started watching the Thomas Crown Affair (the Brosnan version) and had to turn it off after two minutes because of the dreadful plinky plonky piano music they had constantly. But games, no. I tend to enjoy most of them, or at least mentally tune it out if I don't like it. Plus my hearing isn't great at the best of times.

I turned off the music in the Dead Spaces. Not because it was bad, but mostly because the music gave away most of the tension. It was rather interesting to go through hearing only the sound effects (with the throb of the Ishimura or Sprawl in the background) and not having the psycho string stings give away every ambush.

Listen to the chorus.
Over.
And over.
JSRF's music was grossly inferior to the first one, and I can't help but wonder what on earthy they were thinking. [edit] Except Funky Dealer. Youtube that one, only good song in JSRF.

Im currently playing through NIER , and its the first time in my 20+ years of gaming that i HAD to turn off the in game music because it's so terrible. Has this every happened to you? and if so, which game did you have to do this just to make it playable?
This is so clearly flame bait it's not even clever. Nier had many problems, the music was not one of them. It beats the score of the past 5 FF's out of SE, and comes close to being as near perfection as Final Fantasy Tactics or Shadow Hearts 2 were.

Also, what in the holy hell is with the new post entry boxes? They expand downward like every 5 words, way more than needed and annoying.

I really hate the Johnny Guitar song in Fallout NV to the point where every time I hear it I want to throw my character off of a cliff just to escape it.

Im not understanding how people on saying that Nier's music was good. It wasnt terrible as in it was like claws on a chalkboard, the music had like a 5 - 10 second loop , meaning for every minute of gameplay you would hear the loop 6 to 12 times, thats what i found terribly annoying and was making me slowly lose my mind.

As mentioned before, the Persona games. Those soundtracks were kinda good at first, but after the first fifty hours. . . .

That 2005 Rugby game. My brother kept leaving his speakers with it on, eventually I just soaked the disc to fix it. With good reason, too >.>

Erm. Sim City 4 got annoying fast for me. That and any Facebook game will always be muted. I normally love game soundtracks.

The only time I really turn it off is in flash games, they get repetitive and annoying. In games, though, I'll turn it down if it drowns everything out, but not off.

Dragon Quest V. The music wasn't bad, mind you, but it was so utterly generic. None of the themes were memorable, and the battle theme is only stuck in my head because it occurs so often.

Persona 3 is incredibly repetitive. The only theme that I can listen to constantly is the the Strega theme and the female protagonist's theme.

Uh.... I'm sorry but... how exactly? o_O

Easily the best part of Nier was the music. Even people who hated the game loved the music. >.>
In fact, that was something the creator addressed before. Said something about how he thought it was funny that people liked the soundtrack more than the actual game.

ANYWAY, on topic, a recent game I bought, Ar Tonelico Qoga, has some of the most annoying and awful music I've ever heard in a game before. May just be that I'm 2 hours in, but the opening music and voice acting is awful that I just had to turn it off for at least a while.

Really? i actually like the gameplay , but the 5 seconds music loop gets on my nerves so bad, maybe its just me , but it litterally gets me angry, usually in a game i would NOT notice the music OR i will find myself only noticing it when its really good ( like in any SMT game) but in this i noticed it because i found it annoying.
I thought it was the horrible repetition.
