Have you ever hit a bad checkpoint?

Not sure if this counts but I'll write it anyway...

I remember back when I was playing Thief 2, (epic game) I hit a bit of a glitch causing me to have to restart a level. Basically I had saved the game before alerting a guard (not on purpose mind). Yet when I loaded that same save file again all guards nearby were alerted. No matter how many times I reloaded it the guards would spontaneously learn of my existence.

Strangely however, this is a memory that makes me love the game even more and I can't really understand why that is.

Awk, all the time. Though the only one that props up in mind is The Haunted Mansion. You had to save at the Grandfather clocks and as you progress through the game, you, I guess you could say, "unlock" more difficult monsters after you fight them for the first time as bosses. I can always remember hearing a "clangclangclangclangclang" approaching me mere moments after I've loaded my game for a knight, with some huge bugger of an axe attacks me with a "Hyaahhhh!!".
That game was rather startling at times, lest from what I can remember of it anyroad. I should really get that game back from my friend.

Bad Checkpoints are the only checkpoints in Half Life 2 for me.

The best one is this: I just got the magnum. Two guys hammer in through the door but I only have 2 health. Eventually after memorizing and getting luck I was able to plug them both. Though you could never shoot the second guy fast enough. You just had to hope he missed.

Darkvoid where I died when I got the check point during a rail shooting segment, when I reloaded that checkpoint I died again.

Yup, in Resident Evil 4, I was fighting "It". I had no ammo left and had saved just before then. To this day I haven't beaten that game yet because of it.

Manchester in Resistance 1, it is about 20 minutes to the next checkpoint and on hardest that is too long.
This.

That was a very painful 20 mins too. I damn near broke my controller a few times because of all the dying I was doing. Plus it didn't help that I was low on ammo for a lot of my guns, granades saved me there.

There was part in a Xmen game on the PS2 that had a countdown timer and if it ran out, game over. When the timer had 20seconds left I went and saved the game. There was no way for me to escape in 20 sec but, at the time, I thought nothing of it. I figured, if I fail it would restart from when the timer started, but nooooo, you go back to your last(and my only) savepoint... at 20sec... when I couldn't escape... 3/4 of the way through the game...

It's depressing that the game was actually very fun, but enough to replay 3/4 of the game because no one blocked save points during a game over countdown timer. It was a rental so I've never felt any compulsion to go and finish it(like I do when I own the game).

Just cause 2. I saved the game after a part of a mission, then I was exploded by a rocket launcher guy. My last save was 4 hours previous.

Playing the Hobbit computer game, I was in the forest, being chased by a swarm of spiders and almost no health.
I jump towards a save point, only to return RIGHT as the spiders catch up and kill me.
Reload... Fall right into spiders.
Again and again and again...

Many, many times in Oblivion/Fallout 3, it would crash as I was autosaving, and my last back up save was 2 days ago. I got in the habit of saving often, but it's still annoying.

Not a checkpoint, but many years ago I manually saved over my only save file in Tomb Raider 2 on the PS1 about half a second before being crushed by a giant boulder. I reloaded about 15 times but there was no escape. Had to restart. Very sad.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R *whimpers at the memory alone* Saved just as I was being pulled into an anomaly, with a score of rockets headed my way. Took me ages to get out of it, but persistence conquers all!

One time in Fallout 3, I'd finished the Blood Ties quest and fast traveled to Arefu to get my XP reward from Evan King.

Weird thing happened: A Raider somehow spawned in Arefu. And no, this wasn't the weak Raider with maybe a sledgehammer or a 10mm SMG, it always spawned with a Combat Shotgun, Assault Rifle, or something else. It would murder Evan King with ease mere seconds after I'd arrive, then the game tell me I failed that quest, that I was now an enemy of everyone in Arefu and The Family, and that all the work that I did was for naught because the game decided to flip me the bird.

So, I spent literally the next ten minutes reloading the auto save when I fast travel to Arefu, taking pot shots at the Raider, and hoping that I would kill him faster than the Raider could kill Evan King.

Got the Raider eventually, but it was way too frustrating, and the next time I went to Arefu (to steal the Repair Bobblehead), ANOTHER Raider appeared and murdered Evan King. Fuck Arefu and fuck the Family, I don't give a fuck that he died because the game felt like spawning Raiders in a town.
Yeah, that happened to me too, only I started that quest pretty late-game, so it spawned a giant radscorpion. It is quite difficult to attract the bugger's attention so it would go after me instead of Evan King. Bleh.

During my Halo 2 Legendary run I managed to get an autosave during an idiot run to some cover and I soon found out their were two Jackal Snipers.

Controllers were harmed during the reminiscence of this message.

I was playing MW2 on Veteran, that one level where you have to flee downhill after gathering intel at some mansion. Otherwise, Veteran wasn't that hard, but during that particular moment enemies were EVERYWHERE and cover was nowhere to be found, you just had to run. And it auto-saved right at the point where about 10 gun barrels from every direction were aimed directly at my face. Load, die, load, die, load, die. Gods that took some effort to get out of that...

In Max Payne I also managed to quick-save instead of quick-load when I was in the process of falling to my death, in one of those dream levels. And I hadn't used the regular save function in quite some time. Crap crap crap...

Crappy saving also resulted in me fucking up my first Arcanum save game. I apparently accepted some quest a bit too early in the game, when I had to rescue some guy from an ogre. I saved it right before I broke open his cage, but I couldn't leave the cave without the ogre spawning. And of course, that ogre was way more powerful than I was, so I was basically stuck in that cave.
