I had a really bad one in CoDBlOps.
It was in the mission where you play as the guy from the CIA and you have to escape on some rooftops. There was a checkpoint right at the start of a really long jump and every time i re-spawned i would fall down as i didn't have a chance to get enough speed.

Spent 5 minutes before i restarted the entire level.

Not actually a checkpoint but a mmo bind point on Everquest. This was long ago. I was in a raid to kill Lady Vox (huge ass dragon). The raid leader advised the casters to bind in the hallway before the dragon so if we died we could come back in and nuke. Of course the raid was a complete wipe and the raid leader failed to mention or realize that ice giants spawned in that hallway. Of course the raid ditched even though some people (myself included) were completely screwed.

Long story short I kept dying over and over. I went from level 47 to 44 (you lose exp when you die). This was back in the olden days of Everquest when that was a significant amount of grinding. I almost gave up on the game until a few days later I decided to log in at an attempt to escape. Luckily enough a raid was going on right then and I was able to get out of there.

Yep. That's what turned me off of Half-life.

Autosave with not nearly enough ammo to clear the next part. I never went back to the game after that.

Managed to hit one in Halo: Reach just as I'd skidded a Warthog out over a precipice in a bend and into the ocean below.

BF:BC2 on the satellite mission (the part where you drive.) basically, i crashed the jeep into the lake (blame Hags for blowing it up when i was taking a shortcut) and we had to run. basically i thought 'may as well see how far we can go before time runs out.' and then there was a check point. i never made it.
and i never got the jeep back. so i had to restart the entire fucking mission.

Halo Reach, game saved on the falcon gunnery level on the way to spire, just as i shot a charged nade at the wall, it saves, the shot bounced back and hit me, killing me and taking don the falcon, just kept happening from the save until i restarted from the nearest rally point D:
same thing nearly happened to me. i fired about a second before you mustve. thats shit.

CoD 2 checkpoint just far enough that I couldn't make it to the anti air gun in time after spending probablt better part of a hour and a half on veteran trying to get to that point.

Not positive about this. I was about 11 and was playing Abe's Exoddus and you had a quick save feature, i am pretty sure that i needed a grenade from a dispenser but never picked it up and couldn't go back but i had already clicked quick save and back in the old days of ps1 games, you didn't have multiple saves much so i saved over my 4 hour game and couldn't progress any further, meaning i had to restart the entire game.

But it could have been, i was 11 and stupid and couldn't figure out what to do :(

Yes...God yes. KotOR, was on Kashykk and I entered an elevator to go to the forest floor. Little did I know that there would be a bounty hunter and 2 Wookies waiting for me. I only had half HP when the checkpoint kicked in and it kicked in during the elevator loading screen. So I constantly loaded facing the enemies and kept dying.

I then learnt the benefits of keeping two saves.

Playing the campaign in Halo: Reach, was facing off against loads of vehicles so picked up a Rocket Launcher and Fuel Rod Cannon, ran out of ammo for both of them and grenades. After clearing out the area, no other guns to be found so the checkpoint decided to set itself there. And up the next hill were several turret nests and grunts. Damn...

The mission where you're flying a Sabre in Reach.
I got killed, and it saved a checkpoint. And I was on legendary. That is actually the only mission I haven't completed on solo legendary now ¬_¬

Playing Half Life 2 the game decided to checkpoint me as I was barrelling over the edge of a cliff in the buggy driving section, Mad Mad Mad Mad World style. When the checkpoint reloaded I was already in the air over an insta-kill deathdrop, although after about 5 or so consecutive quick deaths the game realised something had gone wrong and reloaded the checkpoint before it. I remember that impressing me.

okay, so this may have been Call of Duty or Halo, any game in either series, haha, so bear with me, because the story has a point even though it's ambigious in details.

I remember playing a game once, (now i'm kinda sure it was a COD) and got a checkpoint right before something killed me, (perhaps a grenade). Time and time again, maybe 10 loads in a row, i died nearly instantly, i tried everything i could. But then something ACTUALLY good happened, the game reverted me the checkpoint RIGHT BEFORE that one. and while i lost a few minutes of gameplay, it was not nearly as bad as restarting the level.

that was intelligent, responsible gameplay programming, exhibiting much forethought. and that experience for whatever reason has always stuck with me.

sorry, for the double post, but that uncanny. haha. both impressed to the point of commenting on it, though i can't be sure what game my experience was from, perhaps Half Life, as i own the Orange Box on both XBox and Steam.

anyways, i just thought that was a happy coincidence and needed to say something.

Arma 2 tutorial mission for helicopters. Checkpointed 3 seconds before crash and I spent 10 minutes trying to recover from a nosedive before giving up.

Gee, pretty much every checkpoint in every halo game. Fight through half the level? nope, no checkpoints for you, now the kill teams are comeing for your face, have fun re-doing all that effort. Sitting still in the middle of nowhere, perfectly safe? OH HAAAAY HAVE ALL THESE CHECKPOINTS I HAVE STOCKPILED, YOU REALLY NEED THEM!

But more directly speaking, a marine in halo 2 got my friends and I in a pickle when he let off a rocket into a pillar at point blank range, with us all hiding behind it. We thought it was hillarious untill we realised we poped a checkpoint right as his finger was on the trigger. We had to pull of a split-second no-scope execution to free ourselveds from him.

Halo 3, on the Ark, one of our friends spawed in a tiny crack in a glass wall, we laughed at him for about half an hour through the glass. Then someone died and spawned in the wall on top of his head. Eventually myself and our last friend died and we spawned in the wall too, we couldnt grenade-suicide ourselves out because we just kept spawning in there. Eventually a horde of brutes came up the glass-ramp to laugh at us and a checkpoint poped up. THERE WAS NO ESCAPE.

I've never really had that. I think The Mile High Club on veteran is the closest it comes for me. 26 attempts on that level and I did it! :D Although maybe Abe's Exoddus with the QS feature probably caused me a few problems, more than likely quick saving as numerous sligs fall from the sky and blow the shit out of Abe.

As much as I love the game I did get this one time in Fallout 3. The game autosaved after I entered a building, not realising I was being chased by a Super Mutant Enclave Enforcer. Needless to say as soon as I entered the building something knocked me clear over the sofa. Dead. Every time.

Thank heavens for the console is all I can say. 'tgm' saved my ass.

Super Mutant Enclave Enforcer? o_O
My friend you have clearly never played the game with FOIP! If you think that sounds bad, you should look up the mechanised Deathclaw Alphas...
Scary stuff.

Well this one is more of an forced cheackpoint. In the game Conduit in the last level you arrive at the end of the elavator as it open up which the entire guards are awaiting for your arrival. Not only are you stuck in one tiny room but you got little cover and the soliders got grenades which they will throw it by your door step. In another word you're screwed.
