Have you ever knowingly bought a game that was "average"

The Doom series. Nothing special, but £3.75 for every Doom game on Steam isn't that steep :p
Wait Doom is average? Didn't it along with Wolfenstein pretty much popularize first person shooters and PC Gaming in general?

Yes, and usually at a handy discount at the second hand bin ;)

The best value of which would have been Fable II: The Lost Chapters~ 20yoyos.

I already rented and played the first. And with what came in the lost chapters I was more than delighted with the buy...

Average games are goood man ;) not great but good bahaha

I bought Viking: Battle for Asgard for a fiver a month or two ago, despite some pretty mediocre reviews and it being from the first gen of games for current consoles. It is, well... meh. I kinda expected that but I was just into the whole viking thing at the time. XD

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West - I really enjoyed it, the graphics were beautiful though the combat was a bit frustrating I thought.

The latest Aliens vs Predators game - I think it's got potential, hated the 'rock, paper, scissors' style combat though but it as a fun game. Online had some interesting ideas too but hardly anyone was on it. (PS3)

Mirror's Edge - Another game with alot of potential. I thoroughly enjoy playing this game, it fast became one of my favourite games. I don't know how many times i've completed the campaign but I still play it to this day.

I bought Dark Sector and it turned out to be a hidden gem amongst the hardcore. And I bought Duke Nukem Forever and hold no regrets.

The only game I thought was average and regret buying was Perfect Dark Zero.

I paid full price for Alpha Protocol. Don't regret it for a second. Despite the slightly clunky controls and set-pieces at times, I'd still rate it one of the best games I've played in the past few years. The majority of the hate is due to reviewers who were expecting "Mass Effect 2 as a spy".

I don't know if NFS: Hot Pursuit is average, but I was certainly gravely disappointed with it. Definitely lacking compared to the series up to that point... minus the disgrace that was Carbon, of course.

Mirror's Edge is another one. I understand why it got hammered in reviews, but it was still awesome for the things it actually got right.

I also recently played Homefront, which I saw got a number of fairly "average" reviews (at least in the "7/10 is bad" review world in which we live). The single player campaign has appalling writing/acting and is even shorter than MW2, but I have to say I found it significantly more enjoyable.

Borderlands.. What a waste of money.. I so wanted to like that game cause every trailer had me really psyched for it.. My god was i ever dissappointed..

Also, Dark Sector, not so good really, good concept, but some flocked up controls..

Virtua Fighter for ps3, bollocks shit that game is.. You use only 2 buttons.. Button smashing deluxe..

Finally being able to see an Exterminatus in action was definately one of the biggest highlights of the game.

Also the opening narration where you get to see Terra and all the ships orbiting it was beautifully done.

I do this literally all the time. But sometimes I find a game more charming if it's not seen as a great game. But that has to do with the reviewers all holding certain, currently popular, factors in such high regard. I bought a lot of the major releases and found them lacking extremely, even though they got rave reviews.

And yes, I absolutely loved the first Kane and Lynch.

Yes I have. I have even bought games that I knew were bad. The thing is, that a game is bad and that a game is something that I will find interesting to play, are while often related, separate.

Enclave(Xbox)- The milkshake that I was drinking at the time was more exciting
Kane and Lynch(PC) - just couldn't play it any more...
The saboteur(PC) - had far more bugs than expected
Mercenaries 2(PC) - completely removed what made M:pD fun and introduced a very cheesy and lame storyline.
Bioshock(PC) - it was ok...until I knew that I had unlimited lives.

All brought at a discounted price

Sonic Unleashed. The night levels can go fuck themselves, and the voice acting makes me through a baby down a flight of stairs, but the day levels are awesome speed.

I have a particular weakness for licensed James Bond games, even though I know they're going to be shit. Never again after Blood Stone.
