Have You Ever Left a Gaming Community?

I was thinking of my own experiences in on-line communities, and how we move on from one community to the next. Or not.

Basically, I was wondering if you have ever left an on-line community that you were a significant part of. Could be a gaming clan, or a community like The Escapist.

What happened? Why did you leave? What happened when you left, and did you ever lurk, re-join or make a new username and rejoin?

I'll dish first. I was heavily involved in a gaming community site for about 2 years. i was a clan leader in 2 of the clans, a mod, wrote for the front page... blah, blah blah... Very involved.

But either the site changed or I did. It became very conservative. Very... American Conservative. Very sexist. Or I just had an awakening and I couldn't deal with the drama and the hate. Anyway over a few months I was debating leaving, and I finally did.

What surprised me was the aftermath: the guy who runs the site abruptly changed the mod requirements and wrote a tirade on his blog. I may have been the trigger, but I am not thinking that this was all on me... I'm just not that big of a deal, you know? I got some very nice words on my blog post as well, sayingthat they enjoyed my stuff but could tell I was unhappy.

I lurked a little: mostly to make sure that my ladies in my clan knew where I was. I also checked back when I heard of a major upheaval in their recruiting policies... More because I am interested in how on-line communities work: how they create and promote their communities. How they keep their core happy while attracting new members...

But: never went back, never reposted.

What about you folks? I KNOW some people make a big stand "I'M LEAVING" and then are stunned when no one asks for them back. Or they come back a few months later (seen this happen often)

Anyone want to confess?

well yeah, i left half life 2 roleplay, css jailbraik ( sometimes i still play but not like active in the community ). its just that some of those things like roleplay are so fucking time consuming and i found it very, very pointless.

Back when I was 11 (currently 22) I played CS 1.6 and source with a community, I played for a couple years with them and we got fairly close. One day I didn't visit the forums and after a while I forgot about it completely.

That was until someone tracked me down on facebook, crazy to see what over a decade will do to people.

I wouldn't say I left on bad terms, however there were a handful of WoW guilds I was in that ended on bad terms. It's what you get for having to rely so heavily on the same people all the time.

Several times. Probably the biggie was leaving the UO community shortly after Trammel. Happened in some other games as well, such as Dark Ages of Camelot and Vanguard.

Good memories... but I never wrote the infamous "I'm Quitting" post, because I think this is just megalomania.

I used to play Runescape like a religion. (shut up I was 12) I had a ton of friends, my level was 110, pretty much everyone respected me. And then I discovered girls...

I used to play Dofus a whole lot, but the Guild I was in just stacked up with nincompoops and the one guy left I liked left said Guild.
Left myself soon after. Didn't say anything to anyone, just bailed out. Soon remembered the game sucks on your own, haven't played much at all since.

A few over the years.
I may leave this one too on account of the site tripping balls on me constantly.

Well a couple of Guilds in Guild Wars over the years some interesting stories there so many really to be honest of ones I've left gotten kicked out of(one for a ridiculous but understandable miscommunication could have asked though. His guild collapsed on him in the end) and ones that more or less dissolved. If some of the stories are that relevant I can tell them.

A good clan that unfortunately dissolved in CoD 2 and then another 2 that I left due to various reasons. Weirdest, funniest , oddest and also angriest times were had in that CoD 2 clan.

i left the robot arena 2 community because it was composed entirely of trolls/self-serving jerks/people who hate you for not agreeing with the popular opinion. i may go back some day if that changes. but we'll just have to see.
