Have You Ever Made/Tried To Make a Game?

When I was about 12-13, I tried to make an RPG with RPGmaker at a friend's place. ....it sucked. It really did.

When I went to college, I downloaded RPGMaker myself, and tried making an RPG. IT was cliched as all hell, and the maps were a little lacking in detail, but it was alright. Didn't make all that much of it, though. Only one continent/chapter, and about half of another one.

And then I got involved in an RPG project a friend was making. THIS one...We have most of the story planned out, about 1/5 of the game done, and it's looking pretty good. ...But considering how much work we have, neither of us has worked on it for a while. :s We DO want to finish it, and maybe some day make it into a REAL RPG. And then share it with the world. ...It's not likely to happen, but we can dream, eh?

I have made a few with Game Maker. Most of them were either really simple, really bad or not finished.

I did make a game called Super Ninja Bros, which is the best one I've made. It's basically Ninja Gaiden's gameplay and character with Super Mario's environments and enemies. It's flawed, and some of the later levels are a bit frustrating, but it a functional platformer, and I actually got the controls working pretty close to Ninja Gaiden's. And it's relatively bug free too.

I just played it a bit because of this thread, and even though the game could be better (obviously), I'm happy with it. The important parts (jumping physics, collision detection etc.) work fine and that's good enough for a game I made just for fun.

I also have a bunch of board game ideas, but I'm not sure if I'll ever do anything with them.

Roughly 15 years ago I made a text adventure in BASIC, just for the fun of it. It was a lot of "IF" and "THEN" and since I was trying to accomodate a variety of outcomes and options, it got pretty tangled pretty fast. But it was fun to make and I still remember the time fondly.

I downloaded unity once.

For about 15 minutes.

Quickly learned that I'm more of a writer, an idea man, not a programmer.

Yeah.. as a kid trading Commodore 64 games we had this guy we knew who had all these great games he wanted to trade but he was an ass asking for super rare or hard to get games.. so we spent an evening making a fake Rambo game up. Had this lame heading saying RAMBO Now Loading and we made it take 10 mins or so fake loading nothing.. if he had patients to sit thru that eventually a lame sprite chopper flew by and said.. you've been screwed dick!

I tried to make a basic scripting language that would allow for really fast development of text-adventure games, but that never got beyond the design stage. It seems like it'd be really hard to successfully make a game by yourself.

Starting with Triple Triad as a base I modified the rules so that it can be played with dice and a small playmat.

I think I've still got the rules around here somewhere.

Believe it or not...my fanfiction noteriety was based on trying to make a game.

Back in college, I had an idea to create a paper and pencil RPG where you could role-play in a video game setting, incorporating several of the characters' abilities within actual classes and even allowing for crossover stories. (This was long before 3rd Edition D&D and the D20 system came into fruition, BTW...which would have made such a game easier to implement.)

Later, when my fanfiction was starting to take off, I wondered if it were possible to actually turn my first fic into a game using some sort of RPG maker. Problem was, I needed one that would allow for a party of up to five characters...and I was having no luck. Even RPG Toolkit seemed...lacking.

Actually...it's kind of a pity. If I could also rip certain soundtracks to incorporate into the game, you guys would have probably had fun with the following scenario...

Protagonist, Mario, Sonic, Megaman, and Link...

...versus Giga Bowser...

...to this theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZfGl07Gexk].

I havent "made" my own per se, but I did extensively hack the GBA fire emblems (hex, code, pallet, and image editing using a hex editor and some modding tools) to add a new story, add characters i liked and remove ones i didn't, and even made a few custom ones.

I've made a couple of mods for Oblivion, but they were mostly overpowered items and invasions of towns (mostly Anvil). I also tried to make a couple of maps for Team Fortress 2, but I gave up.

The only project that is really worth mentioning was this large Half-Life 2 mod where, after Earth defeated the Combine, the resistance betrayed Gordon Freeman and imprisoned him along with the surviving Combine. The G-Man helps him escape and he helps the Combine defeat the resistance.

I could never make it work well, and I would lose focus 2/5ths of the way through a level, but the levels were looking pretty good!

I've designed dozens of tabletop games, especially as a kid.
Just some stuff we played among friends, but it was fun.

I always enjoyed making the game more than playing it.

I was especially proud of our Star Trek space battle game and pokemon adventure thing that incorporated pokemon cards as a part of the game.

I never got into Dungeons and dragons or anything like that because there wasn't any place or people who did anything like that where I lived, but I probably should get into that.

In C++ (as part of a game developing course) I've created clones of Pong and Space Invaders in a console window and Tanks in OpenGL.
With the game engine AGS (Adventure Game Studio), I've done heaps of games, most not released. Currently working on a game that's mainly an in-joke between my friends and I (2D adventure with a turn-based battle system). Part one has been completed and released. Working on part 2.

All I've ever been able to do is make (terrible) 'skin' mods. Anything else is too complicated to me. The last game I did that with was Unreal 2k4... if that tells you anything.

I've written dozens of D&D (or similar games) campaigns. One of my 3.5 ones was on wizards site!

I am however trying to design some board games.

I tried to make a platformer in GameMaker, failed horribly.

I like to edit levels in Frictional Games' HPL Engine though, but I can't do any scripting or any of the other complicated stuff.

Yeah some short ones with UDK and Game Maker. I took Video Game design as a high school freshman and went to a two week camp at Bentley College to learn about game design.
