Have you ever played a really recent game that is just so great it tops your old favorites?

Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII have been great and come close but still aren't in my top 10 list.

Maybe only Borderlands because it's long.
Really? I have found (as did my room mate) that it was lacking in length if you didn't go around doing the quests that the game deemed "trivial".

I would say that Dragon Age: Origins had become, within an hour of playing, my second favourite game of all time bested only by Baulder's Gate which I've probably spent more time in than every game I've bought since owning a 360. Combined.

Mass Effect 1. Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect 3 will be great in about 2 years. Ask me again then.

Mirror's Edge is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. Disappointed that it didn't have multiplayer the first playthrough, but I've found the game to be more enjoyable after a few months w/o playing then return to it and try completing levels as quickly and fluidly as possible.

Half Life 1 got Half Life 2 out of the first place.
Beyond Good and Evil got Prince of Persia out.

Other than that I cannot really think of any more.

I play old games only as you can see, my computer isn't that fond with games of 2006 till now.

Final Fantasy 13 just pushed it's way right into being my overall favorite FF game. It's actually barely edging out 8. Changing position based on my mood.

And each new Pokemon game tops the last one.

God of War 3 definitely got a spot in my top 10 of all time. Although it is just replacing God of War 1's spot.

Well nothing has beaten the Baldur's Gate Saga in terms of pure awesomeness.
Nothing.
Agree! Dragon age was a fun experience, but nowhere close to any of the Baldur's gate games.
It's the same difference of awesomeness as a dragon and a rabbit! The rabbit is fun and all, but pit the two against eachother and it'll be pushing up daisies before it can say "carrot", or whatever rabbits are saying nowadays.

Mass effect was also good games, only ruined by a terrible vehicle section or that horrible scanning.

Much as I hate having what appears to be an unoriginal opinion, Mass Effect 2. It is the only game I have finished, and then instantly started playing again. And again...

Back when I got Crackdown, it completely dropped the original Mercenaries into the same hellhole where I put GTA 4 (when I think about sandbox gameplay). Since then, my current top 4 sandbox games are...

Saints Row 2
Crackdown
Mercenaries 2
Mercenaries 1

I have an odd feeling that once Crackdown 2 comes out it will push Saints Row 2 out of the #1 spot.

I'm not sure its a fair question. In maturing as a gamer, I find that most games dont hold me like they once did. Mass Effect was great. Dragon Age was incredible. But will either of them evoke the fondness and nostalgia that the Baldur's Gate Trilogy does? A game I had spent literal weeks of my life on? Still have installed on my computer today, while the others were uninstalled to make room for newer games? A game who's NPC's I actually *miss* on occasion?

Probably not.

Aliens vs Predator multiplayer beats Fallout 3 for most immersive experience IMO. You genuinely get quite nervous or even scared when doing AVP multiplayer, or at least I do.

<spoiler=One of my fave AVP multiplayer games>I was going along a well lit tunnel, and halfway there I hear a faint *crash* as a light is smashed behind me. I suddenly turn around to catch the Alien off-gaurd, but I can't see it because the bloody light's gone out. I start frantically scanning the area with my torch, and find nothing. Just then my motion sensor starts going crazy, as something moving passes over my head. I look up, then around again. Still nothing.
The beeping of the sensor stops.
I calm for a moment, before a light right in front of me smashes, catching me off guard. Quickly the other lights in front of me smash, and I run into the nearest room, which has a few light in it. Faint ones, but still lights. I cower under it, knowing this will show where I am but I know the Alien can see me anyway, and I can't see it. Frantically hovering my torch all over the room, I honestly jumped in my chair as the light JUST above me smashes. This did it for me, I started spraying my bullets all over the place, missing every one.
Reloading, and I lose control of the Marine, knowing I finally died. The Alien got me.
So I respawn and await something similiar happening.....
[/spoiler]

Sorry, thought it best to describe my experience. It was just SO tense and incredible...

Previously, Baldur's Gate 2 and Secret of Mana were my top games, but Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins and Just Cause 2 have blown those away. Especially Mass Effect 2. I love that series.
