I've went to 5 funerals.

Cried at the first one. Respectfully solemn at the rest of them. No need to make them exciting. They're tragic enough.

I've been to a funeral, and I've been in a morgue before. Not that big a deal in the latter case.

I've seen some at wakes and two as a result of an accident. The latter was when I was much younger and a car got hit in front of me and caused a semi to smash a car into a guardrail. When we stopped to get out I saw people pulling them out of the car. Worst thing I've ever seen in my life.

Yeah, I've been to quite a lot of wakes/funerals. I think it's more awkward being around so many people I don't know than seeing the actual body.

The Austin said:
Nope, never seen a dead guy.

And I imagine that my feelings toward the body would depend on it's state.

Seeing a decapitated body impaled on a tribal spear would be a lot more shocking than seeing an old lady sitting in a casket.
Sitting... O.O

I'm outta here.

I was doing charity work in the Philippines and a fire broke out in the squatter building in our back yard (concrete permanent 2-level house...just really small). The four of us that lived in the main house rushed out and actually got the fire under control with water from a well and a garden hose. We thought everybody got out, but we found the dad dead and burned to death in the bedroom.

The worst part is when the morticians showed up, they did all the entombment stuff right outside my window on the back porch. It was an archaic procedure where they pumped a thicker than blood liquid through his veins after tying off major arteries. This forced all the blood to rupture his heart and just fill up in this chest cavity. They then just stabbed a tube into his stomach and sucked all the blood out. You couldn't look away.

First at my grandfather's funeral some 16 years ago and later at my grandmother's funeral 4 years ago. Though the funerals were quite emotional, the body itself wasn't shocking or anything. Just looked peaceful and like it was asleep. Nothing scary.

Twice, both at funerals. I was a little sad but I felt mostly weird at both of them.

i've seen a few bodies at funerals and once at a morgue

not too bad, i generally think about the plus side of things, such as hopefully they are movin on to a better place and they probably lived a decent life, and shit they are old now so they probably weren't moving around or doing much so they can probably be happier now

but if someone gets blown to fuckin bits right by me or someone suicides or something, i'd probably be sad sayin something like "damn, that sucks..fuck i hope that doesn't happen to me anytime soon"

but regardless everyone has there time come sooner or later, so i try to keep it a positive thing

I saw a dead guy floating in the river Trent. He had jumped off of Trent Bridge here in Nottingham.

I have seen a dead body once and I was sad because it was my grandmother. It makes me feel a bit better knowing she died of old age.

I have, it didn't really change or shock me. However, the corpse itself was not in a bad way.

I would imagine the effect it has on people is largely dependent on the circumstances. For instance, someone seeing the horrors of war and not being shocked and having that memory stick with them would be a little unusual.

Quite a few times, actually. First couple of times were in anatomy class, and the next few were patients at the hospital. The first time is a bit troubling, it certainly makes you facing mortality in a very real, very immediate way. I also thought I was going to become a vegetarian after the first class, but ended up going home to a nice, juicy steak.
It might sound a bit insensitive, because lying there on that slab, in that bed, is someone's father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, whatever, but unfortunately, it comes with the job description. It just wouldn't do if your physician broke down in tears each time she had to deal with death, right?

Yes, plenty of times. I did a course in musculo skeletal anatomy and a core teaching method was use of cadavers. I have seen disected heads, stomachs, legs, arms and other body parts with and without the outer flesh stripped off.

Human heads are the worst part, especially when its something like half a head, cut through the middle vertically, with the brain side pressed up against a side of a glass box. The first time I saw one of these I was visibly sick, though now, I think I can deal with anything. For example, even gore on the net doesn't bother me.

um, about 5, 4 open casket funerals, 1 closed casket... the first one was rather odd, i was 6 or 7, so i had no idea why everyone was crying. 2 was about a year later, i had to pretend to be sad cause i had handled the whole mortality thing after the first 1. 3 and 4 were random relatives i never knew. 5 was probably the most shocking actually, and it was closed. my friend down the street had been planning to scare kids on halloween (he was 16) by pretending to be a hung man, he um... tripped... and... well i dont trust thick ropes anymore. i think i was 11 or 10, it was just kinda sad knowing that he had lost over 50 years of his life, everyone else who died had lived a fuller life. i draw dead things now... well, zombies... kinda.

I've seen many dead bodies, both fresh and ones that had been there for a bit. Along with actually witnessing several people die.

I remember every detail of the day from each time.

I work in a hospital and I've been to Iraq so i guess that might explain it.
