Have you ever stop playing a gerne for trivial reasons?

Ok technically this event happened (will explained below) last Christmas but I forgot about it until recently.

Long story short, I was having a gaming dicussion with a mate of my and at some point I mention the game Freedom Planet was on sales on Steam. Since that game is a tribute in Sonic the Hedgehog in a way and she LOVED the old Sonic games, I thought she will buy it cos I show her the trailer years ago and was excited. To my suprised she turned it down all because it has a dragon in it aka Lilac, one of the playable characters.

Also the discussion also lead to how she wants to played more Sci-Fi only RPG as she longer stand playing fantasy rpg which only baffle me again (especially when 90% of rpg are fantasy base). The reason why I was baffle cos the 3DS remake Dragon quest 8 journey of the Cursed King was out soon and again she ADORE that game when it was out on the PS2. It turns out she already had the Japanese download (she learned Japanese) but ultimately had to uninstall it. Oh before you mention Mass Effect, she doesn't have a console (well ok a PS3 but the lens to played game is broken) but a laptop so Steam is her access to games or low requirement games like The Sim. The only Steam game I can think of that fit her requirement was DEX.

Ok the latter is no so far fetched cos my brother can't stand fantasy rpg but is a fan of sci fi rpg like Mass Effect. Still I cannot fathom why she can't played a game she had loved many years ago due to some new standard she had developed recently (that's only just talking the gaming side of her).

So I'm trying to find rational over irrational into thinking is it normal to have a similar mindset like hers? Do you have a gerne or a perticular games you refuse to played over a small or minor reasons? Also no, hatinf a franchise doesn't count.

Oh before you mention my taste of game or anything in a game that has put me off, the trivial reason I have (I don't played game that has a huge file size to download) is due to my bandwidth limitation. If I had better broadband or no longer the fear of the internmt usage, I would played more games with larger game files.

(Just to be clear, I'm not viewing her to be a freak or anything negative like that about her. I just find it hard to find a common thing to talked or dicuss when she has new requirement to meet beforehand)

She is just going burnout. Fantasy burnout specifically. We all know that game developers can be very unoriginal in their approach, especially concerning storytelling. The Secret World sold many people just on the atmosphere the story provides alone. (Modern day + secret society) I have went through a phase where I couldn't stand to see another elf or dragon again and ignored all games fantasy related. Even when developers use something like fantasy they rarely shift it to make it their own unique flavor. Even during fantasy burnout I could play Witcher as at least the didn't just go "Well, its fantasy we need elves and dragons". As if running down a checklist. Most sci-fi games will not have the same alien species and will at least shift their name and appearance even if they often use the same archetypes for races.

Eventually she will probably come back around but I am sure your friend is just at the phase where if she sees another elf she is going to vomit. Trust me I have been there. I totally relate to having my interest destroyed in a game because I see something like a dragon. Mine personally was elves to the point where I would get very irritated if I saw them pop in a game and even actually make me have less respect for the game's writing. I even started to hate the archetype for a while. An "elf like" alien race would irritate me. But now I am just bored of it and will play games with elves without really giving it much thought. I simply just needed a break.

So, she hasn't told you why? I second Zenja with the fantasy burnout. I have an FPS burnout myself. Even games like Doom that should get me all excited make me feel bored just by thinking about them.

I didn't want to probe her too much into it.

Either way, the explanation make sense so thanks for the replies. I never really had burnout from a game before so that explain why I'm not relating to her current state of gaming.

Dunno if this really counts, but I haven't gone back into the Harvest Moon games since I found out that they made it so that even when you're inside time keeps going (in earlier ones, time didn't advance while you were in a building/mine). Time moving too fast was a problem I've always had with those games, and this made it worse for me.

Also, a lack of bachelors that I find cute.

The only genre that I've sworn off, if it is a genre, are F2P games. Not that I consider paywalls trivial.

MMOs because they all feel the same. FF14-Realm Reborn was the only MMO I actually felt was GOOD in recent memory

Mine would be RTS. I used to love that genre, but none of the recent games in that genre I've played feel 'fresh' to me. They all seem like something I've played before, just with a different coat of paint.

Thing is, I don't have the same problem with other genres that tend play very similarly, like FPS or RPGs. Just RTS. Nut sure whether that counts as trivial.

Racing games.

Once you made a lap you've seen everything that race has to offer, and it happens over and over again.
Tried playing NFS: Most Wanted again recently, but after a total of an hour and a half I already put the game down, purely because it is one gerne I'm burned out on.

I quite understand her thinking. Actually am going through it myself. Used to love fantasy a lot, LOTR and all the other offshoots of the genre. But the thing was at the time it was all a mystery. Stories, creatures and places you'd never seen before that inspires wonder. But they've been used so much now that the wonder turns to bordem from expectation.

I think after I've done Witcher 3 properly for the positive ending, I'm going to leave the fantasy genre alone for some while, barring any friends that want to get me involved in their tripe. Can't even go back to Skyrim with its' awesome dragons. There's got to be more to fantasy than Nordic/tolken fantasy. But there is nothing inspiring left for me there.

Now, space...that's an endless well of creativity. Future and space. Space-future!! That is where the wonder and mystery still lies, waiting to be discovered. So, yep, I agree with your friend.

I will see you there, fair traveller...
