Have you ever used LAN multiplayer or known someone who has?

Lets be honest here guys, I have played games all the way since Pokemon on the game boy (before game boy colour), and I have yet to meet a person who plays LAN games, everyone plays online multiplayer or offline 2 controller or more controller based multilayer. So please post here if you agree that LAN seems a mystery to you like me, or if you have used it and how exactly its different or in any way useful to someone who uses online multiplayer or co-op with a friend offline? as in my view the 2 seem to be the same thing, you need (as I understand it) the internet to use LAN play.

I remember playing Doom 2 over LAN back in the day...

By back in the day I mean when it came out! Ah those were the days...

Yeah, I play LAN when I bring my computer to PC LAN parties and whatnot, and my console friends occasionally use LAN on the weekends when he throws console LAN parties. Sometimes we even mix the two up and play Shadowrun over both the PC and 360, since it's (I think) the only cross-platform game out there.

I always used to do LAN play!
I held LAN parties in my garage, actually! We would play Unreal Tournament, Homeworld, Neverwinter Nights...those were the good days. A bunch of my friends piling their computers onto that one huge table...sloppy joes for supper...a huge amount of pop...and lots and lots of laughing and swearing at each other (Especially during Homeworld games, where would would make and break alliances at the tip of a hat)!

I love LAN gaming.

Yes, yes I have. I used to have LAN groupings with my friends with Total Annihilation, Starcraft, Diablo 2, Unreal Tournament 2000 and the like. Hell, I used to play with a couple friends of mine from school over direct dial up. We would dial into each others computers and either play Descent 2 (with one of my friends) or F-22 Lightning 2 (with my other friend, a fighter jet air combat game). My parents hated me tying up the phone lines and the phone constantly ringing because we'd have to re-dial in each time we'd finish a map/game.

AoE and Starcraft back in high school. The LAN party is a different experience than online play. You can take breaks and eat pizza, play poker or munchkin, whatever you like. The computers need to be able to connect to each other, you don't need an internet connection for that.

All the time. Me and my mates usually go 2-3 times a year to a summerhouse with no internet connection and lan+drink almost non-stop from friday to sunday.

LAN means Local Area Network, so that would be a negative. You need a local area network, but there is absolutely no connection to the internet.

LAN play enables you to play multiplayer games without the need for an internet connection and messy server authorization, verification and whatnot. You can also play with someone who's in the same house and/or room as you are, which makes for closer interaction and a more tight-knit feeling.

As for "2 controller-based multiplayer", very few computer games have that possibility. And for those who do, you generally get a more pleasant experience using separate compuers than you do having to play with a split screen.

Me and a few neighbours LAN Left 4 Dead, CoH since there is way less ping.

And i prefer LAN since:
*everyone is within shouting range
*everyone is within rage smack distance
*you can steal each others candy and energy drinks easily
*No annoying 12 year olds with headsets

My cousins and I played four player LAN Starcraft for three years straight, we absolutely loved it. It's why I rate Starcraft as my second favorite game ever, the amount of hours of enjoyment the four of us got out of it with just a simple hub, four laptops and some cables was amazing, I miss those days and how much pure fun we had...

LAN Parties are the most fun you can have in a dark room with other guys ;)
I have fond memories of playing UT2k, CS:S, Warcraft 3 and many other games over LAN whilst binging on insane amounts of Crisps and Coke. You just don't get the same vibe by playing Online, which is why newer games (Like Starcraft 2) should still inculde basic LAN functionality.

Definitely! One of my many, many runs through Baldur's Gate 2 was with a friend: both of us controlled a character and we had 4 extra NPCs with us. But the most fun we had was playing C&C Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2.
