Have you ever won a 'supposed to lose fight'?

I know this question may sound stupid to some, but I bring it up because in some games you actually can win a 'supposed to lose fight'. Usually however it ends up with your character losing anyway. Personally I have won two of said fights in games, one in Kingdom Hearts and another in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai. How about you, my fellow escapists?

A better term for it would be "Hopeless boss fight" or something like that. TvTropes has a page on it.

and no, I don't think I've won one.

Do you mean like, when you have to fight someone and you get there health down to a certain percentage then a cut scene comes on and they kick your characters ass? Yea happens all the time.

Not so much a boss battle but you remember that game in Final Fantasy X that was kind alike underwater basketball? Remember that pro team that you're supposed to lose to? Yeah, I just barely beat them

Outside of gaming, yeah. I have young nephews and nieces and although it is good to teach them humility, it is also good to lose once in a while at whatever you are playing to keep them interesed and wanting to play - not to mention not bitter at you.

However, I really struggle not to play my best, so a few times I have decided I will lose this round or whatever and have ended up winning.

"OK kids, last one then, winner is the champion of the universe" and then I make sure I lose. Only problem is that I make it too obvious and they still complain that I cheat :-(

I beat the Vanguard in the Demon's Souls tutorial, but once you know how to beat him he's actually really easy so i don't actually know if that should count.

Second that.

OT:

Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast: Revenge of the Colon.

Fighting the end boss on one of the mid levels, you're meant to lose to him. While I'm fairly sure it's impossible to kill him, I lasted a VERY long time. Like, 10+ full minutes before I died and hit the cut-scene. Crazy.

As said by others, the only one I can remember is Leon in Kingdom Hearts 1, there's probably more and I'll post them if I can remember.

Ser Cauthrien in Dragon Age, when you first fight her while rescuing Anora. When I first stumbed upon the fight, I was shocked at the apparent unfairness of it. Almost 10 Archers, two Mages, several Fighters and Cauthrien herself, who could drop my tank in 2-3 hits. I lost the first few times I tried, but I never waited for the death screen (which wouldn't happen since I was supposed to lose) and always loaded the game when the fight turned sour.

Finally, I ran, kited Cauthrien and her fighters halfway across the level, got them in a small room, disposed of the mooks and started whittling down Cauthrien. Every member of my party died multiple times (thank god for 2 mages with Revive) and I spent a good portion of my diligently hoarded stock of Health Poultices, but by the gods I took her down and then went back to mop up the archers and the mages (combo cast a Storm of the Century and block the only exit out of the room).

Afterwards, I went to the Bioware forums to ***** about the insane difficulty of the fight. I found a thread on that very same subject, where a Bioware dev replied, pointing out that by winning that fight players skipped an entire section of the game (prison escape, which is hilarious), at which point I quietly fired up the game again, loaded the save before the fight and lost it on purpose...

There was that fight in Dragon Age. There are a dozen guards willing to pepper you with arrows, four mages, another six or so guards and a boss level mob. You're supposed to be defeated and then thrown in prison, but I beat them then just ran out.

I think that's the only time though. Most of the supposedly unbeatable fights are scripted, so that they really are unbeatable.

/edit Damn, ninja'd by Jandau :p

Wing Commander 3. If you decide to chase after an excaping traitor you delay your carrier's departure and they get mobbed by Kilrathi fighters, leading to the death of Optimistic Wide-Eyed Rookie. However, I dispatched the traitor and double-timed it back to the carrier to take out the attacking fighters and Rookie survived. I even called him on the radio and he said he was fine. Then I landed and got the "that kid died because you ran off like a twat!" cutscene. How? Did he botch his landing?

Later on I played the "protect the superweapon" mission about 20 times before I gave up and just let the thing get blown up before finding out its destruction was an important plot point.

I thought the game was amazing at the time, but if anything like it came out now I'd probably chuck it out the window.

Does fighting Revenants in Dragon Age: Origins count? If not then the only one I remember atm would be in Fable 3, the quest about the play.

Wow, I never realised you were supposed to lose that fight. Took me ages of kiting her around the rooms to finally kill her.

Won the Dragon Age fight against Ser Cauthrien didn't know I was supposed to lose, the game's difficulty is all over the place so I just assumed it was the same thing again

Also Yugioh Forbidden Memories where I beat the main villain at the start of the game and then he refused to except defeat and I had to fight him again until I lost

It happened to me in Attack on Pearl Harbor, in the Japanese campaign.

Although I guess "lose" depends on the viewpoint there. I was supposed to take down an aircraft carrier by doing a kamikaze maneuver, but I used torpedos instead, so I survived, which I was not supposed to do.
I solved it by crashing into the ocean...

Has anyone here ever played Adventure Quest? Using the Beast Master class, I caught the soul of undead Zarxies, (An undead capable of killing entire planets) and unleashed his unholy power on the Devourer of worlds. I used the unholy unlife energy of an undead to kill the devil! Upon which he just sucked my soul out of my mouth, but hey I won.

That fight's difficulty depends on whether or not you perfect the Jecht Shot in practice. If you do, they're near-impossible. If you don't, they're pushovers.
