I like seeing a concept I?m familiar with adapted into a film. The results vary greatly and usually unexpectedly so I try not to form an opinion about them in regards to storylines or plot details.
I've never played any of the Resident Evil games, but I enjoyed the films. Likewise for Silent Hill and I thought that movie was very good.
Given that perspective, I think there is a future for game to film adaptations. A director will never be able to please every fan, so why pretend it should never have been made in the first place?
I was excited to hear Max Payne was being made into a film but I did wonder to myself why? It was already a complete storyline, filled with interesting characters and great voice work. A film would surely not be needed. I really started fearing for it when Mark Wahlberg was cast as Max because I personally think he is a shit actor. But given the script he was given, he had no choice but to be shit in that film because that was all he was allowed to do. So when directors take a well written story and characters, then decide to half stick to the plot, it all goes wrong. But that?s my opinion and that won't be the same as everyone else's.
I think the problem with game to film adaptations is the fans themselves. Games are precisely that...Things to amuse us, to entertain, to thrill. Doom was entertaining, as was the Tomb Raider series. Mortal Kombat was the most tongue in cheek film I have ever seen. Are you not entertained?
As long as people don't expect them to be masterpieces in their own right and utterly faithful to the source materials, then you might just enjoy them more.
P.S Uwe Boll however must stop making films because he truly does suck, and ruins everything he touches.
