I never see many people playing a 3DS out in public, but I do tag plenty of people when I'm out and about. It seems the majority of the people I tag are older people(20's and up). Most people in my area don't play with handhelds in public, it's got a sort of strange negative social stigma attached to it.

The youngest I've known is my cousin (he's 11) has a 3DS XL and I did see one kid trying to get street-pass's at a gamestop... I guess that's it.

Other than that, the vast majority of kids I've seen are always playing on iphones instead.

Well, going by how my childhood was, assuming theirs is anything like mine was, I was always given the last generation (or even earlier) of everything. PS2 is out? I'm lucky to have a hand-me-down PS1. N64? I was still rocking a Genesis. Gameboy advanced? Still was given the Gameboy Color.

Once I started hitting teens, that was when I got caught up. As I got older, my family began buying me more expensive gaming things. PS3? I got one barely a year after release.

PSP? Got one of those also barely a year after release.

I've seen one kid with a 3DS when I was at the grocery store. To be fair I'm not usually in places where kids would be.

Nope. I haven't seen any kids with a 3DS or anything after the DS generation. They all have iPhones and tablets now. Damn slackers need to get off my lawn and get a real handheld gaming device.

A handful here and there. 2 of my professors kids when they had a day where they got out of school early so they were hanging out in a lab with us, and my neighbors kid. Actually I've only seen a few owned by people my age. I know they are around though cause of street pass.

Yes, but then I work in retail and sell them to people for their children. Some people are wary of giving kids the 3D, but that's why the 2DS exists.

I've seen a few, but I do think there's more of a trend for young kids to be giving a parent's old phone or tablet for gaming.

At least that's what most of my friends have been doing for their kids - they upgrade and the kid gets to play with the old one. And I have a couple of coworkers who are giving their kids new tablets for Christmas this year who are the same people who gave their older kids DSes at the same ages a few years back.

I had a gameboy pocket when I was 6, and it was as expensive then as a 3ds is now. I don't see the difference.

I don't think people are generally suggesting that the price keeps parents from buying it, but that the trend as shifted to giving kids multi-function devices rather than gaming-specific ones. Of course most handhelds do have multiple functions now, but there's both the issue of perception and the ease of just handing down an old phone/tablet to the kids rather than buying yet another device on top of those.
