I was one of the top of the comparison totem pole types. And even that wasn't enough, in the end. Now the two abusive people who managed to figure out how to get pregnant blame everything on me. I've had no contact with them for over two years now, so nice. They can be bitter, angry, hateful people all by themselves while I have the happiest life I can considering how badly they tried to ruin it while I was under their thumb. And life *is* getting better for me, finally. ^_^

They definitely don't tell my kid brother "why can't you be more like your sister" anymore. They used to. He's turning out like me anyways... won't buy their BS anymore.

It's a standard thing parents can't help but do, the problem is when it stops.

then again it's funny when they compare you to people like this

and most of the people that I was compared to are still living in the same town I grew up in, married with 5 kids and work at a gas station, it's ceased.

I still get it every day of my life.... unfortunately they dont know that 90% of the people they are comparing me to, get completely wasted each weekend (both typical binge drinking and drugs) and aside from enough money for rent/car they are completely broke.
My father being the hypocritical bastard he is expects me to be someone who gets 100% on everything (and if i dont do it "his" way its the wrong way).
It's still happening now even as im finishing my engineering degree. Thankfully i have learned how to A)tune out and in to conversations, B) Not to care what anyone thinks of me.

My parents never found some ideal person to try and model me after. If they were going to tell me to be like someone else, it was usually some sort of historical figure and we always looked at one or two traits in isolation I should try to emulate.

I'm pretty sure that a friend of mine gets told by his mother that he should be more like me, though.

I got the impression that OP was female, just because the role model held up by his/her parents was. There's not any actual reason anyone couldn't have a role model of the opposite gender, but it doesn't tend to happen much.

Dnt know if its the same but my dad praises my sister for being top of her class. While he kinda ignores me and thinks anything i want to do is stupid. This was apparent when he took us to his work. They all siad about how much my dad talks about her. They didnt even know who is was.

Seriuosly, I can't read this.

Bad grammer too (e.g 'like a classmate that they happen to know that parents of?'. I have no idea what you're trying to say.)

Parents: "You should be like your roommate!"

Little did they know that my roommate gets stoned every sunday night.
How can your roommate get stoned more than once? The intention of a stoneing is to kill.

In terms of grammer, I completely agree.
Sorry if I messed up a bit. I wrote the OP at 3 this morning with a nasty headache. It was that last thing I did before going to sleep....

Ok, I'm male, my parents use female examples more often then guy examples. i think it's because most of the male examples went to different high-schools so they didn't interact with the Parents of mt male classmates much after graduation.

There were other things that i could have mentioned, such as they fact that most of the people they held up as examples were known to get wasted often, but i was only providing a specific example of one person they happened to use often.

The reason I brought up the Orgies was because they would be be pretty put off if they knew. the whole point of them doing it was because they were comparing me to people i used to hang out with. and how they thought they were such "good kids" when they were the ones getting routinely wasted, and having orgies. which are two things i know i would never do, never mind when I was in high-school.

Never. They would always ask 'did so and so do this' when I get a new idea to do something though. Like buy a game or watch a movie.

I find it funny because my parents and teachers say that I should stop comparing myself to other people.

Eh, my parent's bug me about my brother and sister, as they're married, yet I'm 22 and single.
