I think that we need less kill everything games, and more 'DEAR GOD MY AMMO'S GONE RUUUUN!' games. It's less about survival horror now, and more about killing fucking everything. Which means you might as well just go play Halo or something.
Yeah, i get the feeling zombie games are going to end up like Halo 3 with daytime and aliens swapped with nighttime and zombies...

To mix things up a bit, have you guys seen what RE5 looks like? Is that the direction you want Resident Evil games to be taking? I know many of you are die-hard fans of survival horror, will you even give this game a try?

Well, being Australian, i'll have to part with over one hundred of my dollars to get it...I'll probably just borrow it out for a try and then decide...

We've got Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil 5, and probably a sequel to Dead Rising in the works. I mean, Capcom... please?

So no, I don't think they've gone down the tubes. They were never enough of their own genre to even have tubes.

I played the beta and had a lot of fun with it, my only gripe with it is that it literally is RE4 with better graphics and in Africa, and that's not even a bad thing really, I just was hoping to play an actual new game.

Left for Dead proves that we have a long way to go until zombie games are dead.

Left 4 Dead is fun so zombies are certainly going to remain a fixture in the gameing world for now. I believe it is less an issue with zombies in particular, and more an issue with survival horror being supplanted by mainstream action gaming with potentially scary monsters.

LEFT 4 DEAD. And who could forget this gem from 2004?

Zombie games aren't dead.. they may be dieing in terms of what they use to be 'survival horror' But then.. isn't that entire genre dead. I don't think this is a good thing, I in fact find it quite sad as it was an innovative and enjoyable genre. But the changing desires of a global market I feel killed it. Killed it tell it was past undead

But just because what they use to be is dead doesn't mean they are dead. Just different. You know what i would really LOVE to see in a zombie game.. a more tactical approach where you have to focus on keeping a group of survivors alive, survivors could have different skills and etc, and the focus of the game would be about trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse (setting up your own safe zones, making barricades, looting shops for supplies, searching for other survivors) Rather then escaping from it. It would probably need to be done in an isometric turn based style though..

Well i'm not sure if any of you guys have played the new Call of duty (chances are you probaly have). I think the zombie game in that is awesome. It can be a bit slow to start, but as far as multiplayer zombie games go thats pretty much one of the only i have seen. It is nothing new as far as game play is concerned(besides the fact that there is a box that can generate any weapon). But is creative in how you best use your teams mates. Correct me if i'm wrong but this is the best(if not the only) multiplayer zombie game there is.

But... there are no zombies in Left 4 Dead.

OH HERE THEY COME.
ZOMG, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!

actually.. they are infected.. not zombies.. I agree with this. But they fall under the general category of creatures that have lost sentient capabilities and instead act towards a single minded goal. Thus making it OK to throw them in the broth with zombies.

Actually I'm worried about RE5. RE4 was a fine game (or actually, a pretty awesome game), but it did deviate a lot from what made the earlier Resident Evil games great. I'm not just talking about the fact that the enemies are no longer zombies (which for me was a big letdown), but the game also had much more emphasis on action and shooting stuff than the previous games which were more about suspense and eerie calm. Even though I enjoyed RE4, I was kind of hoping it would be a one time thing, and that the next Resident Evil game would be more like the older games again. But alas, they're sticking with this new direction they took. So I'm not really looking forward so much to RE5, I'm not even sure yet if I am going to buy it at all. I heard there'll be a coop mode though, so I might get it for that, but only if there are no other awesome games available around that time.

I hate to say it, but the escapist has destroyed my liking of zombies somewhat. So many instances of zombie survival fandom have just left me thinking. Zombies again? Yawn.
I keep thinking I should get L4D but then I think meh it's zombies again, and don't bother.

Dead Rising could have been a lot better, but was still fun. It was just little things, like some of the boss fights, movement and the spawning was a load of shit too. Turn for back for two seconds and 50 zombies appear from no where, fuck off.
L4D is fucking amazing, except for the lack of actual zombies but lets not get bogged down in specifics, as is Nazi Zombies in CoD.

Yeah, they've amped the zombies up quite a bit. In the early Res, they were slow lumbering creatures. Then we got too good at killing them, so they put Nemesis in. Then we got good at killing him, so they sped up all the zombies and gave them ladders. We're just too good at killing. My flatmates say they are terrified of me when I play Res4: Mercenaries, all fall before my wrath.

If we go back to traditional zombies, then we need true realism as well. More like Condemned than CoD, as well. Start us off in an organic city, randomly, and begin the virus spreading. In the early stages, obviously we will have an advantage over the NPC's because the game title will have 'Zombie' in it so during that time you try and collect weapons, ammo, friends, start up a safe place etc.

As the number of zombies increases exponentially, the game will get harder and harder with a decent learning curve. Perhaps after a certain time, when you are expected to have either a decent base and/or weapons, the army can come in to try and kill everything, Half Life style. I'm not sure, but I think something like that is the only way trad zoms will return. From the dead.

Hm, that actually sounds like a pretty awesome idea! Games always take place after the first outbreak of the zombie virus, not before and during it. But this could actually be creepier in a way. The city starts out as a normal place, but then strange things start happening. You see a TV report about a mysterious incident in another part of the city, then things begin to get out of control, people panic, and then you encounter the first of many zombies, the survivor/zombie ratio dropping all the time. It would be tricky to turn this into a game though, and a lot harder still to turn it into a good game. But it would be awesome if someone tried.
