For some time now one of my friends has been badgering me and others to get into Hawken. It looks interesting, but I honestly didn't have the time because of studies and other things I already have. Most of my friends and I just thought "hey, it's coming to steam, why not just download it so that when we have the time it's right there?"

Well we where all disappointed. The formerly free to play Hawken now requires the purchase of a 30$ item bundle to play the game, and it's on Early Access to boot (my friends and I have nothing good to say about that system).

So, what are your thoughts on Hawken going from free to play to pay to play?

Well it's part of the whole early access pay to test and bug fix our game for us which I find a complete load of bs. Now that it used to be free and now isn't just makes it look even worse. I mean it used to be ftp, and when it's released it's planned as a ftp so why now is it not!? money *****. Also I've read that it seems more grindy than it used to be to encourage micro transactions.

I don't really care I'm more interested in Titanfall anyway.

Honestly, unless you are into grinding, you may as well forget F2P games. I pretty much lose interest the moment I hear F2P (or if there is a sub), I want my games to be fun, but not take two years complete.

Its still free to play. its just that they couldnt just open it up like that because hello server crash. later itl be optional to pay the 30 bucks but for now to keep the servers straight thats what they are doing.

You only need cash for cosmetics. If you play for a while with the default mech or mech of your choice you can have every mech no problem. most people stick to one or two that suit there play style so yeah.

At the present time it is not possible to join the game without paying money, so yes, it is pay to play. It might change back, but for now it isn't free to play.

I didn't pay to play, I signed up for Hawken a year or so ago, tried a few times, was still kind o mess then, haven't touched it since. Got an email last week saying I got an early access key for Steam. Playing 7 hours now, love it. Been on a strange multiplayer spree for about a month or two now jumping from Red Orchestra 2 to Chivalry, and now Hawken. As for pay to win? Don't think so, bought a mech with the bonus in game currency they gave me, this stealth job that looked cool, but I still use the default mechs almost exclusively, especially the heavy.

An excuse is an excuse, but that doesn't change how the game is from the customer side of it. I'm only looking at this from the customer perspective because I'm not a developer, and as such the reasons for it shouldn't have any baring on how it's perceived, especially when the reason is because of something most devs would kill to have being what they are trying to avoid.

???? perhaps what im saying isnt clear.Either that or perhaps you dislike that its pay to play temporarily(for those who were in beta before it went to steam its still ftp)

Ill just copy the post and send a link.

http://www.playhawken.com/steam/faq

s HAWKEN going to stop being a free-to-play game?

HAWKEN will continue to be free-to-play, and account creation will be free and open to everyone following the Early Access period.

So after early access hop on in they just dont want to open the flood gates all at once see.

Do I need to purchase a bundle to play HAWKEN on Steam?

A bundle purchase is only required for new users who do not already have a HAWKEN account, and only during the Early Access period. Users who already have an account have been sent a product code that allows them to download the game on Steam.

Only during the early access period. afterwards its free to play for everyone again(as opposed to us beta testers)

Here's the thing, that only reinforces my point. As it stands only the Alpha players who already had accounts are being allowed to play for free, while anyone who wants to play now during the Beta need to pay 30$. The price may go back to being free after the Beta is over, but as it stands it is no longer a free to play game.

I never said anything to the contrary only that I've READ that it seems more GRINDY not that you couldn't unlock everything. How long would it take to unlock everything for an average skilled player?

Also the main topic was about a ftp going ptp.

Well earlier in it's cycle it would have had more bugs, so early users would essentially be bug testers. Once the game has approached a more complete state I'm not going to knock them for wanting to get paid for all their hard work (looks fuckin' gorgeous, and is a great example of modular art design). It's not like they've got microtransactions or ads (to my knowledge) to get by, it's not like they lost a sale because it was free, they weren't getting sales to begin with, just user feedback.

Yeah, sucks that you can't get something for free (legitimately), in a perfect world all creators would like to have evryone absorb and get involved in their work, but a little thing call 'money' exists and stuff like; walls, a roof, and food require it.

I blame Obama.

EDIT: Actually scratch everything I said, just double checked the sign up and my existing account and these guys went full ape shit.
They are now forcing everyone to delete their game and existing account and forcing them to use Steam only, also disallowing anyone except "premium" users to sign up, and we are still talking about a game that is microtransactioned top to bottom.

Their FAQ states that this is only going on during the transition period so we will see, for now I absolutely would not bother with it.
The game is cool but forcing people to pay upfront for what is still a free to play game is nonsense, also in my region the price tag is $40 for a game where I would never recommend going more then $20 deep because there is still very very little content.
