So Silent Hill HD Collection was missing SH1/0.
DBZ Budokai was missing 1.
And now Red Faction 'Collection' is missing RF2.

Why do they release collections, with missing games?
Often times when said missing games are available on PSN/XBL/etc?

Metal Gear HD didn't have MGS1, which was a shame. It would have been nice to get The Twin Snakes Gamecube version as it hasn't been released outside of that console, but I think Nintendo still sort of own it or something.

Might wanna rephrase that because it makes it sound like Budokai 1 was missing when it's Budokai 2 that's not in the HD collection. :3

OT: The Ratchet and Clank HD collection doesn't have Deadlocked/Gladiator inside of it, but it was later released for the PSN as a separate game...with terrible framerate...>.>
As for the certain games omitted, they are sometimes already available on the PSN/XBLA for a while. For the Metal Gear Solid one, MGS1 was on the PSN for quite a long time before the HD collection game out, so they omitted it from the collection. Not to mention that MGS1 is only available on the PSN so it might have been licensing issues that prevented it from being put on the collection.

As for Budokai 2, Budokai 3 is basically 2 with more refined mechanics so they probably decided just to port only the first and 3rd games. Plus remember they had to redo all the music in the games because of the controversy with Kenji Yamamoto and the fact that he apparently plagiarized many of the tracks from other artists.

I think in Silent Hill's case, the second and third ones are the most popular ones. Sh 1, 4, and Origins are kind of a mixed bag, but that doesn't excuse what they did.

Or anything else regarding that "collection" for that matter... Why no, I'm not bitter. >.>

Anyways, I assume they do that because they just want to sell the popular titles from the series. This is all assuming that they have the rights to them, so really at this point it's not so much of a collection as it is an HD upgrade. There are "fan favorites" in series that have gone on for a long time, so it kinda makes sense that they would upgrade them and sell them.

I think they should drop the "collection" part since it's a little dishonest.

MGS4 would have definitely taken up too much space. The total size of MGS4 alone is 30 GB, so they'd of needed at least 5 or 6 discs for the 360 version of the HD collection with all the games, and at least 2 Bluray discs for the PS3 version. As for MGS1 I think that was a licensing issue more than anything, and I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I can't say for certain what the issue with MGS1 was, but there was a difference in the Japanese and North American release. The Japanese version had a code to download MGS1 from the online marketplace, while the North American one had Peacewalker. Later on the Legacy version of the collection had most of the MGS titles, but was still missing out on things like Portable Ops and the AC!D series.
Yeah, then it sounds like a licensing issue with the regions then. There are different licensing agreements that must be made with other regions and companies depending on how the game was localized at times. For example, in Europe PS Vita owners can download the Spyro the Dragon series and the Crash Bandicoot series onto their Vitas, but they cannot in the North American region because of licensing issues with Activision. Activision didn't localize the original games in Europe, that was another company. It's really just a big jumbled mess dealing with the broken and outdated copyright laws, which is why some games are caught in a limbo and can't be rereleased onto an online market place or put on HD collections. Earthbound was caught in this limbo for about a decade.

Well god of war has about 5 collections now for 6 or 7 games in total, and 2 of them not in any of the collections.

When I saw it didn't have the first, I lost a lot of interest.

It really is a shame.

well you can't really make an HD port of the original PS1 game (If we weren't to use Twin Snakes) because apparently bringing that audio in HD brings up background noise in the sound recording.

That is another possibility that I didn't think of. Not to mention whether the developers have the original audio files or not. If they don't then they have to rerecord the audio which is pretty hefty, and sometimes not all the voice actors are available/alive to do the roles. If they do have it, then you'll notice some inconsistencies for sure because the audio was rendered at a different hertz level probably to compensate for the old system. There could also be problems with matching the audio up correctly with new models as well. Happened in the HD version of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix in a few spots that's for sure. Then again, Square had all the audio right, but a lot of the data for the first Final Mix game were damaged, story goes there was a server fire or something, so they had to rebuild most of the game from the ground up.

The Hitman Collection on Steam didn't include Contracts for the longest time (might still not, but the game itself is on Steam now). I think it was some soundtrack licensing issue.

Steam also likes to release "collections" of the older games in a franchise after a new installment is released. It takes little common sense to know that a full-price new game won't be included in such a collection, but it's still misleading.

No MGS1 in the HD collection is a bummer, though. I never played any of the MGS games, and would have gladly bought the collection if it didn't mean I would still miss out on the first damn game. They could at least have included the non-HD version that's on PSN for the PS3 collection.

I already own an original disc of Metal Gear Solid, but I do wish The Twin Snakes could have been in the HD collection. Not that it would have been possible due to Nintendo technically owning it, but still. Since Peace Walker was included, I guess Portable Ops could count as "missing." It wouldn't quite be "portable" if it were ported, but it is considered a canon installment, unlike some of the others.

The original Silent Hill is an obvious omission, I suppose. I don't think it's even possible to port a PS1 game with HD graphics - it'd have to be rebuilt from the ground up. An emulation would have been good, but then the PS3 version would have had an obvious advantage. It was also missing the fourth one (my favorite), but eh. Still, the Silent Hill collection was absolutely horrible, so perhaps that was for the better.

And perhaps some were hoping that Devil May Cry 2 would be missing from the DMC HD Collection...

The Silent Hill one pissed me off a lot, as someone who has never really played a Silent Hill game, but has had a lot of desire to, the HD collection looked attractive. I know it isn't supposed to have been very good, with redone voices and ruining the fog effects, but one of the main turn offs is it missing the first game. I have trouble playing something with a "2" in it, without playing the first one, even if they aren't connected.

So I feel you.

And like someone else said, the Metal Gear Solid collection was missing the first one, which I bought anyway on PSN, but still.

And The Room.
I've heard the collection is horrible though so no reason to be disappointed at the omissions.

Mass Effect Trilogy is missing most of the DLC of each game and just has 1 or 2. I'm aware it's not reading as GoTY or whatever but it certainly should have the DLC of the games. That counts right? :|

Okay well how about Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection not containing Sonic 3 and Knuckles linked, they have each game, but you can't play them as the single title they become. There's no excuse for it really, the games are around 4MB, even with 40+ games that's not scratching the surface of even a DVD.
