So apparently reviewers do not have a copy of doom and they will not get it until launch day. at least according to total biscuit.

I'm making this thread as a warning, if you preorder the game I would suggest canceling it. Stuff like this always comes off the shady (remember assassin's Creed)

So what do you guys think about this?

1)Well, that's some shady ass shit. Unless you think the gubbins are really, really nice, backing out of a pre-order seems a prudent move.

2)How do you talk about this for 25 minutes? There isn't even an options menu.

Denying review copies always raises alarm bells with me. On very rare occasions there may be a reason to do so that is not shady but I do not believe that is the case with Doom.

There is of course no guarantee the game is bad or rather not very good but if it turns out to be largely excellent I will be surprised. I did not play it nor do I have any interest in the product at all (and never have had in the brand) but I got the impression the multiplayer Beta demo did not go down as well as they had hoped.

I haven't watched TB's video on it yet but I didn't really need his previous videos to decide that pre-ordering in general is almost never a good idea anyway (and there are many on the subject). I'm not sure if this is because they don't have faith in the game as a whole, the multiplayer or, if it's going to wind up being a Smash Bros Brawl kind of deal where they just don't want the story leaked before launch (after all, maybe this one isn't about a huge dude on Mars killing demons from Hell then going to Hell to kill more demons from Hell). I can't wait until launch day though just to see if this thing turns out to be a load of garbage or not. I still don't have a PS4 or PC capable of playing it so no matter the outcome, I'm still kinda stuck waiting until this game hits a low price point before I have a chance to talk about how it isn't as bad as everybody said.

I was just watching part of a live stream TB was doing on the game, since it just launced for him a few hours earlier, the general feel i got was he was enjoying the shit out of the game, so if you trust TB's opinion or share a simular one you might not be dissapointed with the game.

Performance on stream seemed solid too exept for some odd frame rate locking after going into menu's, capped at 60 for no reason when it was running uncapped prior.

As always though wait for a proper review or whatever you choose todo.

Pre-ordering a game that has pre-order incentives is incentivizing publishers to pull shit like this. Anyone that pre-orders has few to blame but themselves, as TotalBiscuit rightly points out towards the end.

That said, that first five minutes that shows the singleplayer gameplay looks fun as fuck. Much, MUCH better than all the other gameplay shown so far, as it actually has some speed and skill to it. Never was interested in the multiplayer, so I'll have to wait until the game is out to find out if the singleplayer is for me.

IF this is true, then Bethesda can kiss my sale goodbye. Always-online for singleplayer content is unacceptable, regardless of how fun it is.

I've seen a gameplay video of it and was not impressed. It doesn't look like it's worth $60 and a 40+Gb download. Even though I don't have a bandwidth cap I don't like downloading huge games that I'm not even sure I'll like enough.

Having already watched the final boss/ending of the game plus the first hour or so of the game from the beginning I'm at least intrigued about the plot though I can probably assume how the dots connect as its fairly standard looking.

One pro is that you can faff about outside on the Martian surface with no need for O2. Judging from the sound design there must be an atmosphere or they stopped giving a damn about realism in a vacuum.

The music only plays during combat heavy "kill all the mobs in this area to unlock the doors" arenas (yes that tired trope in in this game in spades) and it really sucks, to me at least. Its like they added generic heavy metal guitar riffs to a dubstep remix of the Metroid Prime OST. Other than that it seems to have no music at all.

Enemies are, at least in the early sections of the game total pussies that you shoot once or twice with your unlimited ammo blaster pistol then run up and instagib as they turn various glowstick colors to indicate you can stop paying attention to them.

Considering how effective the starting pistol is, having unlimited ammo, accuracy, and you can charge it up like a megabuster I'd almost prefer using it to the other weapons.

You can pretend its a gritty Mega Man crossover.

To be fair the other weapons are pretty awesome too, and you can mod them. For example you can add a lil box of tiny rockets to the heavy assault rifle or give the shotgun explosive rounds.

The chainsaw seems to be a one shot weapon on anything, but requires fuel to use. Tougher mobs require more fuel so maybe you can upgrade the tank to hold more and one shot Mancubi or whatever.

Health/Armor is pick up based and not auto refill. You can find dinguses that let you upgrade your "Praetor" suit which seems to be made by the damn Chozo this time around. Its pretty cool actually.

Graphically I'm kind of torn. I appreciate that it is not ALL dark corridors and rooms, and that it has actual colors beyond grey, green, and brown. It looks really good actually, but it looks TOO good. I will definitely look at later areas of the game, presumably in hell, to see if it carries through but the UAC compound is definitely shiny and pretty pristine looking all things considered.

The enemies are all..clean. Everything is too clean. Its like someone took prerendered background from PS1 games and realized them fully in 3D. Its hard to explain. Its like they made really really good models and then forgot to add the details and textures to make them look real.

You know how monsters in Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3 look like they are covered in slime, or fur, or blood, or all of the above as well as various other kinds of effluence?

Well everything in Doom 4 looks like it could have been in Rage or a random tech demo for a lighting engine. It creates great shadows, and it moves around convincingly, but it might as well be made of plastic because it looks fake.

Not terrible, but then again how detailed to you need to make something that will exist for a few seconds and then get turned into bloody chunks?

The map is a definite improvement to the original. It has everything you'd expect these days, the doors of the tri-colored varieties clearly labelled for one. You can upgrade your suit to improve how the map is filled out/make it easier to detect items and secrets etc. as well.

Alternatively you can upgrade your dex to make your various actions quicker. No seriously. You can also upgrade your resistance to environmental hazards (including barrels) and so on. A separate system lets you choose to upgrade your hp, armor, or ammo. I believe you can also find artifacts like in Turok 2 to grant bonuses as well.

Right at the beginning they say multiplayer and the level editor require servers, but they don't say anything about the single player game. Arguably a level editor shouldn't require an internet connection, but they might be talking about sharing content through their servers.

Also, if they were going to throw in DRM, they could just hand out review copies without it and add it before release. It's more likely that the game is simply shit.

I don't pre-order either way. Seems like a dumb thing to do, especially these days where games get better as time goes on (patches, bug fixes, etc) and about all the big games get GotY editions.

And then he uploaded this a while later:

Seems like the pre-order crowd dodged a bullet there. The singleplayer content in that first video in the OP already got me salivating though. That's some high-octane shooter action, oh baby yes. I'll probably look into it once my exams finish.

Still, not handing out review copies doesn't breed consumer confidence much.

So why exactly would they bother denying review copies if the game is awesome? It's not like supply was low, or there is a huge plot to spoil...is there?
