Like everything else, gaming is a great hobby, as long as it isn't obsessive. If you spend the majority of your time doing it, and neglect other parts of your life then there is a problem. Otherwise, there's no issue.

A healthy gamer, in my opinion, is one who realizes when s/he has to stop playing. Whatever the reason may be.

I don't think that you have to be physically healthy to play games; surely anyone can.
Or am I missing the point?

OT: I'd say that I am a healthy gamer, sure I sometimes find a really fun game and play it too much, but I quickly get over it and stop playing for a while, I like it that way and I don't wish to change.

I also don't have much of a social life, but I do have friends who I occasionaly go out with.

Sure, anyone can play games. What I meant was that if you let gaming stop you from going outside/exercising, then that's well... not healthy.

A healthy gamer is one who enjoys playing game they enjoys with little regard to other people's opinion on their hobby. On top of this, it is also someone who enjoys their hobby in moderation, i.e. they do not disregard important tasks they need to complete for the sake of playing games, and do not let gaming become the sole defining aspect of their life.

I spend quite a lot of time playing games, but I'll always turn it off in favor of something else; going out to do something with a friend, getting some daily exercise, etc. Excessive gaming for me, isn't because I'm obsessed with it, but usually just when there's nothing else to do.

He still has the impression that gamers take themselves too seriously and invest too much time into their 'hobby'. At this time the model and term 'healthy gamer' was introduced. It was meant to shield from negative generalization and extreme cases, but managed to drive the discussion to the ground. We couldn't agree on what sets the bar for a 'healthy gamer'.

So I ask you, if you had to define what makes a 'healthy gamer' what would you say ?
The same applies to every other activity you do excessively.
It doesn't only apply to gaming, yet people are so narrow-minded that they only apply it to certain fields of activity which they don't understand or don't wanna understand.
Some people should think about everything a bit more and don't jump to conclusions, that's what I would tell your friend who is obviously kinda set in his ways (even though you mentioned he is changing his views slowly).

So, why don't ppl bash on soccer supporters the same way as they bash on gamers?
Sure they do. In my hometown, soccer supporters are the most hated people out there. Religious devotes call them the "spawn of Satan".

Gaming is my favourite thing to do (yes favourite, more so than anything you care to name), as a result I do a lot of it, not to the complete exclusion of other things, sure but I don't think anything of sitting down of an evening for 4-6 hours of gaming, or 6-9 hours at a weekend... sometimes I may go a little over the top and hit 16 hours a day when I'm on holiday but thats not a regular thing.

I really enjoy playing, but I don't let it own me. I will hang out with friends and do other activities away from gaming if the opportunity arises. That said, I will occasionally opt to stay in and play video games because a) I'm really into a good game and want to finish it or b) I just don't feel like leaving my apartment after working/going to school for 8+ hours. I think I'm a healthy gamer, but I also think I'm a healthy eater and I just ate a double bacon chili cheeseburger. :D
