What's the big deal? they've had artificial hearts for years and there has been a push to constant stream pumps lately because they last longer.

While I doubt this is as effective as an actual heart it's still amazing. The part I love about this though is that creationists are always saying that evolution is bullshit because we can't recreate the things that are in nature. If the possibility of making artificial organs is there then they have lost one of their reasons for dismissing evolution. It wont make a difference though, I'm sure we could present solid proof for it and they would dismiss that. However now we can at least dismiss them using actual facts.

YES we know that creationism is fucking stupid, but this thread is kinda about the miracles which the human race can make into reality, and about how creationists are going to ignore evolution theory. You're like a feminist who sees a LEGO-commercial and responds with "this is sooo anti-woman, how dare they market that to boys only, but the lego for girl things is also sexist blablalblablablabla..."
You ignore the part where I say it's amazing that we are able to emulate nature and only see this as Atheist stupidity and you feel like complaining about how I am missing the point?

As a biologist I think this is amazing, having a friend who has actually had a heart transplant I think this is amazing. As a believer in evolution over creationism I think this is amazing. Honestly it seems like you ignore that I thought this is amazing for the sole purpose of ranting about idiotic Atheists who can't see past their beliefs. Now I might be wrong, but this kind of mentality is what makes it impossible to actually have an intelligent discussion on the internet. See what you want to see if that truly makes you feel better.
To be fair to the guy calling you out, it did seem a bit unnecessary. I mean sure, what you said is true, but at the same time, it did seem like you were taking the opportunity to shoehorn it in for no reason. Intelligent discussion is good, but I mean there is a time and a place for it, and this really didn't feel like it.
I can agree that there's no reason to bring creationism into this, but accusing me of ignoring the medical breakthrough or how amazing it is that we are able to replicate human organs when that was in fact my FIRST sentence is idiotic. He accused me of ignoring what's important and with that he ignored what I was saying. Tell me how that makes sense.
Oh no, you're quite right there too, sort of glossed over it a bit there, yeah unfair on his part, though I think he may have just had a bit of a knee jerk reaction, ah well, this is the internet, can't win em all I suppose :)

Within the next few years "printing organs" will become more common. "Printing" parts is already used for muscle tendons and few other things. I am not sure what the current status on bone is though... I am curious if it will become more practical to replace body parts rather than continue research towards cures if the part can simply be replaced. The possibilities new research brings to the medical world are hard to fathom.
I think the difference between curing an ailment and replacing the affected tissue is mostly cost and/or convenience. For things that can only be cured by replacement, then a new organ is the way to go. Innovation is the heart and soul of modern science and medicine, after all.

That is amazing to hear about the heart surgery. Give it some more time and we'll be able to do all kinds of things. Though I am curious...if the doctors were able to create a heart machine for him, couldn't they have done the same thing for his liver, knowing that he was on a waiting list?
First off, it sounds like he wasn't on a list for a liver transplant. The liver failure is a recent thing that started happening within the last couple weeks. Second the liver is a bit more complicated than the heart. I think the best we have right now is some liver dialysis techniques but the machines for that are too large and will not help someone for long term problems.

I am really interested to see what they decide after the autopsy, wondering if something from the pumps leached into his blood causing liver damage.

No worries, I could have put more effort into my original post and made it clear that the physiology behind this was equally amazing, but I sometimes forget how important it is to be 100% clear when writing something on the internet at times.
