"Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger, 28, has died of a possible drug overdose involving sleeping pills in New York, police have confirmed.

"Ledger was found dead in his bed at his apartment on Broome Street, Soho, in Manhattan, by his housekeeper about 3.35pm local time, the TMZ website said."

His last performance was as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

As much as most other threads, I would imagine.

Shame he died, I suppose. I've never much cared for celebrities to any greater extent than your average person, but I guess some people enjoyed his films...

Don't do drugs, and if you do... don't do lots of drugs.

I heard about this this morning. Sad to lose another 'good' actor. At least he didn't show up n the tabloids every day like Brittney. Makes you wonder why they're not dead yet.

This is the off-topic discussion area, so why the hell not?

RIP Heath, I hope this serves as a wake-up call for other drug users, that's about the only positive that could come out of this tragedy.

Well it looks like I was wrong in the deadpool thread... Too bad, he was a decent actor.

Wow. I remember reading an article about him and how he beat out some other impressive actors for the role, and how he had a book with sadistic things the Joker would consider funny - like AIDS, for example.

Just so random. What a waste.

Wow, I'm amazed this hasn't appeared on Oz news yet. If any of our home-grown actors do anything more interesting than crossing the street we hear about it.
Edit: No, it's definitely hit the fan down under. Front pages and everything. We Aussies are so parochial.

It's really creepy that the Joker was his last role. It's going to be sort of creepy knowing I'm watching a movie where the sadistic and psychotic Joker is played by a guy who may have indeed committed suicide.

Heath Ledger, for those of you who are unaware, also starred in "A Knight's Tale", "The Patriot", "The Brothers Grim", "Casanova", and "Brokeback Mountain."

He died just shortly after production, which means that he will be the Joker from beyond the grave. He is, in fact, quite dead. You don't need to make up a headline like that when you live in New York.

Apparently the reason he took sleeping pills is because he was disturbed by the Joker so much that it caused him to lose sleep. Which means I really want to see this movie now.

Also, it's interesting that Jack Nicholson warned Heath about portraying the Joker.

Warned him? That's creepy! What sort of warning?

Unfortunately, I'm cold and heartless when it comes to movie stars, so as always when I heard he had died the first thing that popped to mind was: 'Which one's Heath Ledger again? Isn't he some sort of gay knight?'

apart from his (yawn) hollywood efforts, Heath Ledger was in one of my all time favourite movies: Two Hands. Anyone who hasn't seen it (not sure if it got much of a release outside of Oz), i urge you to hunt out a copy now- brilliantly twisted story of crime, love, and the things you do to get by in life when it seems there's nothing else. Also stars Bryan Brown and a pre-US Rose Byrne. It's Australian crime drama at it's best.
As for the rest of his work.... I'm looking forward to batman...
