The media seized on this and published all these stupid headlines about the crypic "warning", without paying attention to the rest of the interview, in which it was made clear that Nicholson:

1) was joking.

Sometimes you smile because it is all that is keeping you from tears and madness. A smile can be your death mask without a single thing to be happy about. A smile can be a shield, a sword, a clever spell to keep all the negativity at bay or at least make it look like you have been winning against madness.

yeah I heard that during a recent interview heath said that the joker was such a hard role for him to play because the character had no redeeming qualities what so ever. He apparently dove so deep in the role that it led to depression, which led to his overdose/death.
so basically the role killed him, which is, ultimately, epic.
