Also, earplugs will be a must if you plan to get ANY sleep cos of all the drunken idiots staying up singing all night. Sleep is important, missing the last day of the festival cos you were too knackered to stay awake is a complete arse.
have fun.
I totally agree, but moreover, earplugs are not just practical for when you're sleeping. I also sincerely recommend using them during the performances, for your own health, and to avoid getting a terrible beep in your ears for the rest of the week, or more if you're really uncareful and/or have sensitive ears.

Second thing, try to carry as little as possible during the performances. Especially wallets and cellphones are typical targets for pickpockets. And if you have really bad luck, they could even fall out of your pocket during a moshpit or whatever. Almost impossible to find. :(
A good tip is to wear one of those small bags across your neck, or to take only money with you in your pockets.

And don't forget to drink a lot! It's not on rare occasion that people faint during concerts because they didn't drink enough...

Have fun!

Ive got my Bloodstock festival place booked ^^ (its a British heavy/death metal festival)

Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian and Saxon are there I cant wait!

Thing is me and my mates have never been to a music festival (its three days long ^^) and dont really know what to take with us. we got the tents and stuff but what else should we have? Like food and drink tactics? Is it worth taking a small gas cooker? And should I sneak in a stupid amount of booze?

You dont have to have advice specific to Heavy Metal Festivals im talking festivals in general is there anything I should know and take?

Take some collapsable chairs (for when you're not too interested in any bands that are on) a waterproof jacket, lots of layers, sun cream, a hat with a cap/bandana (something to cover your head) and LOTS of cash, they may have ATM's there but they rarely get filled up at festivals and they're unreliable anyway.

Yeah, this. Also, eat. It wasn't my finest hour when I nearly died in a moshpit (for fucking Muse, of all bands) because all I'd had that day was half a small portion of chips and a bottle of Diet Coke.
