As long as it's not Death Metal, Heavy Metal is awesome.

(Seriously, the awesome soundtracks being ruined by the guttural screaming... )
Yup yup, totally agree here. But then again, they say one man's meat is another man's poison.

Eh, it's okay. The thing is, I like my music to have tons of variety, and I don't get really all that much from metal. I've got an album from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and a few songs from System of a Down, but I'd sooner listen to something more definitively varied.

Heavy Metal my favorite forms of music. It's pure awesomeness for your ears and I will defend it till the day I die. I love the idea of a group of musicians coming together to create music. Not a single person on stage with background dancers, but the whole band on stage shredding it up. What I love is talent. there is no talent in autotuned music. todays popular music is what I refer to as "Safe sounding". by this I mean that they are never willing to experiment as much because they aren't in it for music, they are in it for money. Heavy Metal is just such a high octane music. As for the debate that seems to be going on abouve about different forms of metal. WHAT DOES IT MATTER? metal is metal, there are all sorts of sub genres and branches to explore but its all in the same tree. As for those that say its too violent, sure I will give it to you that some is violent, but others are really peacefull, listen to Dio or peace sells by megadeth and tell me otherwise. Metal is awesome because it covers so many different feelings. Rage, love, hate, sadness, suffering, joy. the list goes on..... Alas I digress.... I love it to death (that's a Alice Cooper album there) and if you don't, maybe you have yet to find the right band or song to get you there.

Well, since people have done so much within the context of Metal, it has outgrown its status as a simple subgenre of Rock and Roll, and become a full-fledged genre unto itself. And, like with any other genre, there are highlights (Death, Cynic, Discordance Axis and many other excellent bands) and lowlights (Limp Bizkit, Korn, Poison and many other god-awful bands).

Metal is the most varied and complex genres in the world today. It is the most accessible and globally unified genre of music, no matter where you are in the world a metal fan will share a beer and a few headbangs with you. I love metal, all day every day I am listening to one form of metal or another.

If someone thinks it's the same thing over and over again, then they obviously weren't really looking that hard into the genre.

I don't like it. Not sure why, just don't like the sound of it. I like that old-time rock and roll!

I just started listening to metal about a year and a half ago, even getting involved in a couple of bands with my friends. I started with power metal, mostly Helloween and Gamma Ray. Then I started looking at bands' influences and I started listening to Iron Maiden. A while down the road, my three favorite bands are Five Finger Death Punch, Sevendust, and Gamma Ray.

I like metal for the capacity for complexity while still being somewhat primal.

tl;dr, Metal is awesome.

I agree with you.

I mean, I've listened to a lot of complex metal bands and have hung around musicians who specialized on metal and they were all extremely skilled musicians (I should know, I've been member of a few bands myself), but the things is that ultimately, metal is extremely repetitive and boring. Never mind the fact that a lot of the progressions and musical modes applied in metal music, were already being explored by the beginning of the 1950's.

Prog metal is outstanding, if you ask me. That genre alone is diverse enough to keep me listening for ages. I'm also a fan of melodic death and 80s thrash with some other tidbits of things thrown in.

My favorite bands have to be Scale the Summit, Protest the Hero and Between the Buried and Me. Scale the Summit should write orchestral stuff, it'd be top notch, honestly. Protest has my favorite singer in metal today (Rody, you're the man) and Between the Buried and Me has... well... a lot of really good shit. However, I've recently been getting into Devin Townsend as well, as the man is simply a MAD GENIUS.

Shit is good.

Both. In regards to almost all music there is good and bad within a genre. Very rarely is an entire genre just shit, one of those genres is christian rock, or really any christian music trying to be "cool". It just ends up awkward and facepalm worthy.

For me I love Heavy Metal and I think its going to be around for a long time. For others, some say it's just the same thing over and over again and some say it's irritating and promotes violence. So whats your opinion?

(No I am not talking about Scream-O or Death metal but feel to talk about it)
My opinion is that there are many types of people and for that reason there's many types of music. When you think about music, it has no practical purpose. It's a purely atheistic choice saying one genre is worse than the other is like saying red is worse than blue. You could say you like red more though.
