I'm going to clear something up once and for all:

"Screamo" is NOT anything with screaming in it. In fact, as a genre description it is practically useless. It used to refer to an offshoot of hardcore punk that was mixed with elements of emo music, but it's now just used to refer to so many possible things that you can't really use the term anymore.

I suppose now it would mean anything that sounds emo with some screamed vocals, but that could mean anything from Breathe Carolina to early Escape the Fate, so there's a wide range of styles mixed within, it's really impossible to label all of it to suck.

I don't understand all the hate either.... cept for screamo... srsly, how is screamo so popular!?
Screamo isn't very popular and most of the popularity of the genre comes from it's hilarious misuse, considering it's an off-shoot of hardcore punk, not metal.

Why all the hate for video games? >.>

I'm not a metalhead, per se, but I've got enough metal in my collection I think most people will at least give me a pass. XD

Gorguts has some stuff that is in common with classical music. But youll probably hate them too.
Yeah, referring random internet ppl to Gorguts is rarely a positive thing. Hell, I only pop in Obscura around folks I dislike.

I'd say symphonic black would be close to classical, but I'm pretty sure including an orchestra disqualifies you.

Also, to the individuals who said they dislike metal; my 52 year old mother will drum right along with thrash, black, and tech death and has Opeth on her mp3 player. Ya'll are sissies.

If I had to guess, it's the ridiculous amount of people who create threads on here about how it's the only "true music" and all the people who try to "out-metal" each other by claiming to be fans of increasingly obscure artists. We get it, you guys like metal. I do to. Now lets move on...

On the internet, metalheads are everywhere, but IRL, we're few and far between.
Sorry, but where are you from? Metal is easily the biggest musical community, the best selling live community, and one with the broadest selection of bands. Throw a brick, and you'll hit a metalhead. I mean, even in the smallest of towns in the UK, there's a pub or bar that plays rock and metal. There are hundreds of festivals tailored to the community and, frankly, it isn't a taboo anymore, if it ever was. I don't know what it's like in America, but in Europe it's so big it's getting boring
What part of UK are we talking.
Mostly England, but all through Scotland as well. Even if the pub itself isn't overly "rocky", at least they'll have a jukebox that plays rock and metal a lot. Seriosuly, I've not been to a town in England without one, nor in Scotland
I have a hard time believing you. No one round these parts likes metal that much.

And if they do its bollocks like Slipknot....
yeah, here in America, no place like that exists. While there are still metal festivals and stuff, metal is no longer a mainstream "cool" genre (with the exception of death metal, or screaming metal) in at least the eastern united states.
-Mainstream cool genre being Death Metal.

Super wrong there.
no, mainstream cool is rap/hip-hop. Death Metal does have a very big following though here. To me though, it's nearly incomparable to older metal.
What kind of Death Metal?

Deathcore posercore?

Or the real old school death metal stuff? Like Death,Morbid Angel,Autopsy,Suffocation.... etc...
Is it so hard to believe that someone can enjoy Death, AND Deathcore without having to endure shitty labels like "posercore"?
I don't like to limit myself to one genre, when I can enjoy the best bands from both.

but I can't stand the screamo 'singing' and would turn it off if I heard it. Whatever style of music you play, you should at least have decent vocals.
Its not screamo.

And its as good as normal vocals.

Deal with it.

Growling takes alot of skill in general. Dunno about Black Metal or other harsh vocals though.
If you say so. I'll still take Robert Plant or Bruce Dickinson over any of these guys who growl, scream, or whatever you want to call it though.
But that doesnt mean growls arent decent. :<
Not to you maybe. If you see something in it, then fair enough,I'm not telling you that you shouldn't listen to it. Personally though, I find that it sounds horrible, and will never understand its popularity.

I like metal. Most kinds of metal. Black, death, whatever-core (yes, I know, that barely counts). I don't really enjoy older metal groups though... something about them just doesn't work for me. :/

I tell people I'm a metalhead and it surprises them. I'm the kind of person who wears ties and sportcoats just for the hell of it. I'm also widely regarded as an intellectual amongst my peers. It baffles them that I choose to listen to a "stupid" genre like metal.

Well, when I have time, I like to introduce them to my friends over at Iron Maiden. I like to show them exactly how many songs are based on literature (there's a ton of them), references to great works in their lyrics (William Blake is referred to in "Paschendale"), and I've even broken down exactly why Iron Maiden (and other metal music) is more similar to classical music than anything else they listen to.

I choose Iron Maiden because they're the easiest example. Not all metal is as intelligent as they are.

When people see me and hear my arguments, the game usually changes from "metal sucks" or "metal is stupid" to "it's just not my thing." That last bit in quotes probably sums up half the issue. The other half being because people are ignorant. They hear what the popular opinion is and they run with it. Let's face it, heavy metal definitely does not fall into the popular opinion. And it shouldn't.

EDIT: Yeah, I know how cocky I look posting that first paragraph. Sorry?
