Heavy rain is a video game (and a fantastic one at that).

It's basically like the Lucas Arts point and click games etc. I don't see why people keep debating this...

Okay, since I'm one of the people that's obviously missing the point, let me ask you something: Why does it matter to create a new subgenre to label a style that thus far only has one title? Whether or not it becomes important relies almost solely on whether or not other people jump on the bandwagon and this becomes like this generations adventure game.

Because I am not saying Heavy Rain is that "new breed". I am saying Heavy Rain gave me an idea for a new breed. You can take Heavy Rain and throw it out of the conversation and my point still stands about visual novels. (Of which I had no idea about until I made this thread.) This thread isn't about Heavy Rain specifically but instead what doors Heavy Rain could open or make more apparent.

Where I have Game Informer, EGM, or the Ecapist, they have Entertainment Weekly, Empire, and IMDB. If I mention Heavy Rain and what it is to them, it piques their interest. Of course, they have not heard of it because it isn't marketed to their "demographic". If I mention it to my friends that play games alot, they say "sounds ghey" or they say it sounds "neat" but they have a bunch of other titles they are more interested in catching up on. Heavy Rain is confined not only to the video game market but to the PS3 market. Anyone outside of that small bubble probably is unaware of it. Anyone inside that small bubble isn't necessarily interested.

Since making this thread I have discussed the topic with a couple people who are mostly movie watchers and don't play games. They like the idea of it and see potential but also problems that we talked about. But here at the Escapist some still haven't gotten over the typical "Yes-huh, it's a video game, deal with it" response. Much like if someone puts up "Am I the only one..." thread here comes a bunch of people trying to sound "wise" by only responding with "You're never the only one" but instead they just come off as pretentious twits with nothing to say and are unaware of figures of speech.
I understand we here at the escapist see a lot of the same threads pop up a lot but this is a new question to my knowledge and I have no idea how I would even search for this. But I can guarantee this topic hasn't came up for a couple months at least. I have been on here a lot in that time. This is about a new medium that more closely follows the movie aspect than the game aspect. I suppose I could also use Mass Effect as an example but in that you pick every line of dialogue and the story won't progress ... It's just a bad example due to the NEED to have input for the game to continue on and know what to do.

Heads up: replies like that are full of pretension.

It's a game. You play it. Who cares.
Now I am pretentious? LOL. Sorry, didn't know that pointing out that you were not contributing to the topic of the thread was pretentious.

You still fail to see the point being made in the thread though - so I am still pretentious. You are seeing a question I am not asking. I am not asking what should we call heavy rain. I am not saying it is not a video game. Try reading the thread.

I think it is a video game if I recall correctly.

Nice article but that point is fairly dated now.
