You can't go wrong with a Gibson SG. They look and sound amazing.
OR
A BC Rich Warlock. They look sooo cool.
I have been trying to locate one of them actually. They are almost worth it on looks alone. Hell, the headstock alone.

Hey isn't that one of Lita Ford's favourites?

I guess it is.

My dad got a BC Rich Masterpiece Bich for free so he gave it to me:

I just wish I could play the darn thing.

Sorry mate. But maybe one day I'll learn how to play.
Tonight! Start of with just playing around with it. Holding it, getting the feel of it, pull the stings play with the knobs. Then move onto things like scales and then songs.

If you can find a Fender Strat or Tele within your budget then I highly recommend one as they cover alot of ground music genre wise, I play alot of different styles and they all come out really well on a Fender Strat, fender made guitars are all round great.
If not Yamaha are good, and well priced.

What kind of music do you like? It matters cuz you wouldnt play... lets say country on a Jackson guitar
I like to play Classic rock like Guns n' Roses, AC/DC and the like. I will play stuff like Rise Against and Blink 182 but it's too easy most of the time.

EDIT: And mainstreamish metal.
For those styles of music, discount Fender / Squier as you really need Humbucker pickups. Looks at an Epiphone SG (For that AC/DC look) or Les Paul (For the Slash look). You could go for a Flying-V if you want something more showy.

There are other ranges out there such as Ibanez, Yamaha et al. The best bet is to go to your local guitar store and ask to try a range until you find the one that suits your budget and stlye the best. Usually they're helpful like that because it means you will go back for other stuff and also tell your mates how great they were. Hell, on one shop I was offered the chance to play a Gibson SG but I declined as didn't want to become "that guy who was so shite he even made an SG sound like a kitten being raped!"

Wardy
Plays a Squier Strat.

All in good time. I have exams on soon.

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get a hand with something.

I've been playing guitar for a few years now, I've never really taken the guitar part of guitar playing too seriously. I'll play pretty much anything and I would describe my skill level as intermediate.
I currently own a chinese strat copy. I love it to bits but I really have outgrown it.

At the end of the day it's going to come down to what feels best. But since I've noticed that there is quite a following of guitars on The Escapist and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some makes and models to look at.

My budget is around $500AUD.
Dude, just buy a regular but nice electric of the model of your chosing at a moderate price, and devote the rest of your funds towards modding it.

Just learn how to read tabs. Then you can play any song you want.

I suggest an Epiphone SG. Reasonable price as well as good sound.
How far behind the quality of the Gibson are they?
Not very. In a blind A-B listening test you'd be hard pressed to tell the Epi SG and a Gibson apart. In fact, to be honest I much prefer the Epi SGs over the Gibsons just because the Gibson SGs all have chunky cricket-bat necks like a Les Paul and the Epi SGs have slightly thinner ones. The Epi SG model to get is the G-400, it has the best quality pickups and hardware plus a set neck as opposed to the bolt-on necks of the other models. They normally retail for about $600-700AU but you should be able to get one for $500 if you shop around secondhand or find a new one on special.

I don't recommend ever paying over $1000AU for an electric - anything above that price and you're paying for the name on the headstock, not the actual quality of the instrument. A great player will sound great with any crappy instrument, and a shitty player will still sound shitty holding a $5000 guitar, so prioritise in terms of what looks cool, sounds nice and feels good in your hands.

Set necks vs bolt-on - well, bolt-ons are prone to going out of tune a little more, because there's always a bit of movement in the "bolt" area. That's the only real difference of worth.

Forget Godin - out of your price range. Ibanez RG series is decent, SA series is also good - a little more money but if you find one on special - nice guitars. Jackson and BC Rich also do reasonable budget instruments. Personally I'd go the Epi though. You're almost always better off going for the high-end model of a budget brand, than the low-end model of a prestige brand.

Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated. I have seen at least two shops that have the Epi SG for $500 so I will make a point to try it out.

I was considering doing this. The model I was looking at doing this with was the Ibanez RG170DX. They retail for around $400. have you ever heard of anyone modding these or are they just not worth it?
