Okay so heres the deal, recentely I have decided to start to listen to music more as I hardly do know. The only problem is that I haven't the slightest clue whats good and whats not (which I find strange being 14 at senior school). I thought this would be a good place to ask around so I would like people if you would, to post bands or seperate songs that you like and what you think is good. P.s, Would you kindly leave out any screamo recommendations, I sat next to my friend for 32 hours straight where the only the thing I could hear was screamo playing at full blast through his headphones, I had a head ache after, but if you want to reccomend any then go ahead. P.s.s - Justin Beiber = no

Quick question; what are your feelings on Japanese music?
Most of my recommendations will be just that >>

En mi opinion I would go with some good ol' Pink Floyd, their stuff is amazing and their a great band to get into.

I think if you listen to all kinds of music it helps, I mean I've got Beethoven next to Beyonce on my iTunes.

http://www.last.fm/ it gives you recommendations based on what you already like

EDIT: to add listen to what you like, if others don't like it screw them. i mean i listen to almost anything from Hardcore Punk to Pop, from Contemporary Jazz to Techno. So yeah anything really.

At least a hint on which genres to pick from would be nice...

Young Guns, I saw them live supporting another band and bought their EP the next day. Been a big fan ever since, their new album from last summer is awesome too.

Or Judas Priest, pretty much everything they've done is worthy of a listen, especially the Painkiller album (in my opinion anyway)

Reading over your post again, I see you said you don't like Screamo music... would you put death metal in the same category? >>

Tune into a radio station. By far the easiest way to access music atm.

I don't know why you feel it's a necessity to listen to more music, and that you find it difficult to get into. Music is everywhere.

But yeah, music channels on TV and radio stations would be a good start I guess.

I'll list some. Unlike a lot of (maybe even most) people here, I do not like metal, so maybe my choices will be a little different.

I'll list my top 5 most played on iTunes (without repeating a band, otherwise it would be all Wilco)
1. Wilco - Jesus Etc

2. Frightened Rabbit - Old Old Fashioned

3. Build to Spill - The Plan

4. The Replacements - I Will Dare

5. The New Pornographers - Moves

I think my iTunes reset or something. Some of those don't seem like they should be so high up. But I love them all still.

My personal recommendation?

Go rent Guitar Hero or Rock Band (and a guitar) and play through all the songs. Better yet, play at a friend's house (particularly if they've downloaded some additional music). If you like a song, look up the artist and hear some music samples from them on Amazon. If you like, buy the album.

Seriously, my partner and I doubled our music library by finding bands we liked in Rockband games (I've owned 1-3) going through much the process I just described. I'd have never heard of several of my (now) favorite bands if I hadn't heard them first playing Rockband.

No screamo, eh? Well, I'd recommend these guys. They're significantly awesome:
