Ninja Scroll. It's older, but it;s still a very good movie.

Also, Berserk. Very dated, but if you can get passed the older VA and animation, it's a compelling story.
You know, I came in this thread thinking of suggesting Berserk. What are the chances someone else mentions it in the first post?

The odd thing about Berserk is that if you didn't know that the story is continued via the manga, you would pull your hair out wondering what the hell happened in the last episode.

Another funny Anime I enjoy by the author of HunterXHunter - Level E. Hilarious anime with a very lovable main character.

You might like animes such as Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, possibly Modoka Magica if you don't mind some cutesiness (just give it a couple episodes), Akira, Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood (there are two series, don't ask me why), Death Note, Baccano and Paranoia Agent.

Have fun!

PS: The show you're trying to remember is Yu Yu Hakusho. Just to let you know

Yeah, I always recommend the manga over the anime.

I am no anime expert, the only 2 I have watched are Dragon ball z (who hasn't?) and bleach.

Bleach is kind of like ninja's, I guess.

I think bleach is like the next step up from DBZ and Nartuo, the step after that is the ones with all really Asian sounding names. That's the feeling I get anyway, DBZ is like babies first anime, Bleach is like getting more into anime and something that sounds like "Yu Yu Hakusho" is you're really into it ... maybe that's just me though.

Bleach is basically about a soul society who protect/save souls from becoming "evil", we follow a kid who starts off knowing nothing about this soul business and becomes a member of the soul society.

Apparently it has a lot of filler but I like it all, it has some silly moments but has some serious points (especially when it comes to Kenpachi), it also has a few mind fucky moments.

If you want to know an episode that gives the best idea of what Bleach is like, find episode number 119. You have a few fights, some nice philosophy and the odd silly bit.

Monster is gonna get you your fix of 'Mature themes', oh very much so. No ninja's or samurai, unfortunately, but give this a spin anyway. 'twas fuckin' brilliant.
I love you. Too few people ever talk about Monster.

It may not be what you're looking for, OP, as it is not about ninjas fighting monsters and the titular "monster" is 'just' an sociopath. Oh, but what a sociopath...

You'll definitely get your fix of "mature themes", though. It's an adult crime drama set in Germany, with almost no typical animé weirdness (I don't mean that as an insult against animé I just can't think of another way to word it). Definitely something everyone should watch, animé fan or not.

I hear the animé is crap, but the Blade of the Immortal manga is supposed to be very good.

Don't worry I didn't need 4 episodes to convince myself that Claymore was worth watching. I already love the show after the first episode. And thanks everyone for the nice list you gave me. After I'm done with Claymore and Yu Yu Hakusho, I'll have a lot of anime to catch up on especially Death Note since I don't want to anger the gentleman who wrote in ALL CAPS. Finally, yes I know that Yu Yu Hakusho is not that mature or full of ninjas but damn it it was the first anime show I ever saw and I still find it funny.

But thanks for the list you guys.

Oh and as a bonus could you try and tell me the name of an anime which had a gang of around 6 people one of which was a tall man with red Elvis like hair, another one was able to shoot blue lightning out of his finger when he held it like a gun and another one I can remember was dressed in a red outfit and could conjure plants I think. I remember he carried a sort of rose.

the show is called Yu Yu Hakusho, and it is great stuff.

It might not fit all your criteria but ill offer up something im fairly confident no one would even think of.

Phantom 2040.

Good luck finding it.

I guess you could go for something like say Reign the conqueror, which would likely be much much easier to find, even though it is obscure in its own right

Fate/Zero. In a nutshell, magi summon legendary heroes and villains as Servants in a war to win a miracle from Holy grail, everyone having their own use for that wish (it relates to Nasuverse metaphysics). Only 24 episodes full of awesome characters and moments, and fairly true to original LN.

I love how the OP specifically asked for a ninja anime, but everyone is posting anything but.

Well, I can't say I've seen a lot of those, myself. Other than Ninja Scroll, which I haven't seen but sounds like something that would fit your description, Katanagatari had ninjas, but I didn't really like it, but maybe you will, since a lot of people seems to like it. Again, ninja animes aren't really my expertise, but it's hard to find a decent one, or at least one that doesn't star an orange-clad ninja. The closest I've seen are a few samurai animes (Samurai Champloo, Shigurui, Sword of the Stranger, Rurouni Kenshin) if that interest you.

And if you're looking to expand a bit, just give some of the other poster's recommendation a try, even if some I don't agree with, there's a chance they'd appeal to you.

Hmm...
May I would like to sugest the following series:
- Samurai Champloo;
- Basilisk;
- Cowboy Bebop (it DOES have a guy wielding a katana).

That's exactly what I was thinking when reading the thread. I think I said that I don't want it to be set in the future and I got recommended a lot of anime set in the future.

My favorite Mature Anime:

Cowboy Bebop-Bounty Hunters in Space. A lot of fun to watch with a good cast of interesting characters. Almost every episode feels unique. Mostly action and drama, a bit of humor throughout and occasionally delves into different genres depending on episode.

Samurai Champloo-Same people who made Cowboy Bebop, but set in Edo era Japan. A little bit less unique as far as episodes but still funny and fun to watch.

Black Lagoon-Pirates in the South China sea, who live in a 3rd world city controlled by criminal organizations. Very violent and sometimes very depressing, but interesting to watch.

Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex-A special Japanese anti-terrorism in 2030 japan, all badasses in their own right. Very cyberpunk but easy to get into if you pay attention. Very well written and deals with a lot of mature themes and current issues.

I suppose I would recommend either Death Note or Full Metal Alchemist.

Both are quite awesome and explore interesting, mature themes.

I'm surprised when the OP writes "I don't want it to be based in the future", and every other post is a futuristic anime.

Here's my list:
Michiko to Hatchin(It's about a young orphan girl being taken care of by a Catholic priest and his abusive family in an alternate version of Brazil who is abducted by her wild convict mother, yeah, it's pretty crazy and its definitely very original and mature)
Baccano(Also very original, it doesn't particularly have a main character. Instead, if follows the interactions between several groups of people on a train and the murders that follow)
Darker Than Black(I don't really know how to explain this one very well, but it's probably worth your while to check it out)
Black Cat(Probably the least mature of this group. About an assassin from an elite group of assassins who joins up with a sweeper(bounty hunter) and a human weapon and their adventures. Also note: although it is the least mature, don't think it's going to be something like naruto or a typical shonen anime, it's just not quite as mature as the rest on this list, but not downright immature or anything of the sort)
Samurai Champloo(Hiphop fighting Samurai gangsters. i.e., Gang culture mixed with meiji era Japan)
Cowboy Bebob(Space cowboy bounty hunters. I can't really justly describe it, but it's a classic. You should watch it.)
Higashi No Eden/Eden of the East(A man with no memory comes to completely naked with nothing but a phone, a gun, oh, and around 10 million dollars and has no idea what is going on)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I couldn't really find any mature series with ninjas being key players, but all of the series I picked are fairly mature. You won't be seeing any samey teen anime girl falls out of sky they awkwardly get together in the last episode panty raising slapstick drama crap here, nosireebob.
