well, in my opinion if hipster is what it pretends to be then there can't be one definition of hipster. seeing as how hipsters attempt to get away from anything mainstream or populat, really they have to be original. hipsters that go with the "hipster crowd" are poser fucks that can bite me
Yuppie (short for "young urban professional" or "young upwardly-mobile professional") is a term that refers to a member of the upper middle class in their twenties or thirties. They were basically people who were unaffected by the recession in the 80s, they apparently lived in the most expensive parts of town. I had to research them for a play.
OT: From what I gather, Hipster's are people who make their unknown taste in music very well known and believe it's cooler to be underground.
They wear vintage clothes, and those large, thick framed glasses, despite the fact they do not need them.
I think if you've ever uttered the words, or something along the lines of:
"I liked/wore that shirt/band/artist/product before it was famous! Everyone is copying me."
"Whatever, you probably haven't heard of the bands I like."
"This band/artist/celebrity has totally sold out."
I can assume you have some Hipster tendencies.
I'm probably missing a bit there, but I prefer not talking to them.
The deffinitions of hipster seem to get broader and broader every fucking day, it's ridiculous. When people talk or accuse people of being hipsters oten the only tinkg they're reffering to is their appearence. Wearing hoodies makes you a hipster... thick rimmed glasses makes you a hipster... Converse shoes make you a hipster. Right, so by that logic my fucking dad is a hipster? And since when did it become so terrible to like indie or less well known music than chart music? I'm sorry I'd rather listen to Four Tet than rush off to buy Kesha's album.
When people talk about smug, affluent, upper middle class, ironic, judgemental hipster stereotypes, mow many of you have actually encountered any of those types of people? I haven't seen a social clique recieve this much hate and vitriol since emos.
Fact is, and I bet people will hate me for this, people hate hipsters because it's cool. Of course it fucking is. All publications hate hipsters periodically. Is there any basis for a level of hatred and distaste on this level? No. The afformentioned extreme stereotype probably doesn't even exist.
These days it just seems to be an irrational hatred of anyone young, fashionably concious, and remotely politically minded. I wont even mention indie music because anyone who has any taste in music listens to lesser known or indie artists.

That last one is basically what I came to contribute. I've had a hard time grasping the whole hipster definition as well. I have met people who have one or two "hipster qualities" (I mean, there's a lot of people out there who listen to indie music, and everybody can be a bit smug about something from time to time right?), but I can't honestly say I've ever met the whole package (including the "being a douche" part). I'm sure there are a couple of them out there, maybe they are less frequent over here where I live, but it sounds more like something the Internet has blown out of proportion.
It feels mostly like that whole emo storm a year or two back.
Well the neighborhood next to mine, is basically hipster central USA, so I pretty much have nothing but bad things to say about them. Regarding the hipster dress code, I think the only rule, is to wake up and dress yourself blind folded, after a night of binge drinking and impulse shopping, thats the only way I can describe how they dress. I think the term to describe their personalities was first heard by me on Zero Punctuation. They are "twatty cakes".
These articles are actually quite concise, although I think the last depiction gives them too much credit. They aren't evil geniuses.
