I'm afraid Joy Division will be the best of the bunch about here.
Though, I will make my own suggestion, while not terribly depressing, there is an air of magical melancholy.

"Piano Man" by Billy Joel. It's about sad, lonely souls who put up a false front and turn to alcohol in a futile attempt to forget past mistakes.
I find the song depressing, but maybe it's because I imagine the bar to be more run-down than how the music video depicts it. I've always thought bars are depressing places anyway.

Anymore info you can give aside from being attacked ?
I didn't want to bring it up because it might upset some people. Basically the opening shows a girl getting raped, the whole thing's in slo-mo and we don't show anything explicit but it's still an uncomfertable scene.
(EDITED the Quote, didnt mean to quote the person)

Oh, Down in a Hole by Alice in CHains is perfect for that. Thats pretty much the eptitemy of rape victims feelings (at least, when I listend to the song with a girl who was raped, she told me thats how she felt).

Anyway, since that was said, and I feel Nirvana's Rape Me would be very poor taste, maybe this:

Though I dont know, since its a girl being raped, and I'm not sure the relationship or what will happen after.

Depending how much of a fight the girl puts up, theres this:

Or this:

Prepare to get a lot of grunge by the way.

But the Piano Man is their guiding light, their man of companionship in the dark and smoke filled room. Its about how everyone has secrets and bad parts of their life, but in the end, are all the same and come together under the hauntingly slow and beautiful melody of the Piano and its caretaker.

... least, thats what I always got out of it. ANd not to say you're wrong of course. just saying.

EDIT2:
There's also this, which after my Humanities teacher played, has risen back up from my youth and is haunting my mind:

Thats radiohead's spinning plates.
