Borderlands. Ignore what people say about it only being fun with friends, I've played it for 100+ hours, at least 95% of which was single player.

I echo the previous comments and suggest Oblivion! I just got it for the PS3 for Christmas. Talk about get maximum hours of enjoyment for a small price.

Borderlands doesnt have character creation, instead you pick one of four character classes and can upgrade them how you like. Both Oblivion and Fallout 3 has full character customization capabilities.

if you're new to RPG's i'd reccomend Bioshock. the rpg elements are pretty simplified so its a good way of getting into the genre without being overwhelmed by the depth of some of the other titles. actually you can buy bioshock & TES: oblivion as a 2 disk set. so buy both!

Im leaning towards oblivion (price) but a friend has borderlands and the shooting aspect looks interesting, as well as the weapon customisation

also, what about dragonage?

For the PS3 itself? Dragon Age: Origins is pretty nice. It takes some getting into, especially if you're not already used to Bioware RPGs. But you'll sink a good long amount of time into it if you're willing to work for it.

The bigger question is whether you want linearity (the story progresses of its own accord, you're basically playing through to get from story point to story point) or non-linearity (the story moves at your pace, you're an integral part, and there's plenty to do outside of the story).

If you like the former, FFXIII will be out soon, and you'd probably enjoy it. You can get FFVII and VIII from the Playstation Store thing, and play those. The story is strictly linear, so you basically just run around making the story move ahead, but the pacing is good, as is the gameplay, so you'll probably like them.

If you like sprawling worlds, and having to make what you will with basically a blank canvass, go for Oblivion or Fallout 3. Something where you make your character, and the story is what you make of it.

Sorry, I had to fix this for you.
While Bioshock was a decent game (I own and beat it through,) it was lacking in an RPG system.

While the stat based stuff isn't there Bioshock actually has a much more RPG style of philosophy than it dioes an FPS one, it plays more like Deus Ex than it does like CoD. Although I don't know where the idea of it being less deep than most games comes from, it's far deeper than anything I've seen in this generation.

I agree that it doesn't feel like CoD, but it still feels like just another First-person shooter with RPG "elements" tacked on.
When I say it isn't deep, I mean that I find the gameplay overall to be rather shallow.
(Turn, shoot; turn, shoot; plasmid, shoot.)
The story, while being predictable, was alright, and it brought you into the world of Rapture somewhat well. The atmosphere was also splendid, depicting a post-catastrophe underwater-city in a good way.
