okay, I adore metroid and castlevania. Easily, these are my favourite gaming franchises, (next to Mass Effect and basically anything bioware of course).

However I find myself lacking in that metroidvania-style gameplay. You know the kind; searching through a large area, backtracking, exploration, all that fun stuff.

So if you have any games please share them!

Note: I would like them on 3DS or PC please, I have a console but i want to keep noise down for my landlord, so i prefer these two platforms.

It's not really my genere of choice so I haven't paid that much attention but it seems STEAM had had a few games like that on sale, mostly indie titles, over the last couple of years. Sadly not being especially interested I don't know the names, unless a genere fan shows up the best suggestion I have is to browse their action games.

I'll also say that there is one called "Cave Story+" I hear a lot of good things about in that genere, it's fairly old though, so you probably played it, but if you haven't that might be worth checking out.

You and I obviously disagree on the definition of "fun" :p

OT: Wasn't there a new Zelda game on the DS recently which was supposed to be in the style of the older SNES games? That sounds like it might fit the bill.

I'd recommend Dust: An Elysian Tail and Bunny Must Die! Chelsea and the Seven Devils off the top of my head; you can find both on Steam. You might also consider Rogue Legacy as a Metroidvania, depending on your definition.

La Mulana. You can get it on Steam. It's a bit more difficult than, say, Super Metroid or Castlevania SotN. I think of it as kind of a cross between Castlevania SotN and the NES Castlevanias with an Indiana Jones type theme.

Guacamelee! is awesome (I think it's on PC).

Shantae: Risky's Revenge is decent. Its on the 3DS Eshop (DSi ware I think).

Valdis Story: Abyssal City is a pretty darn good Metroidvania style game. Should be pretty cheap on Steam.

I was gonna recommend Valdis Story but someone beat me to the punch!

Terraria and Starbound have some "elements" of Metroidvania in terms of the gameplay and huge worlds you will probably end up backtracking through... however they have no real "level design" and instead rely on procedural generation and have a heavy crafting/building emphasis, which may not be your cup of tea, but they are both excellent games.

My Favorite in the genre is actually 2 for PS1 called Tomba! and Tomba! 2, might be a tad hard to find now, and they are on console, but I highly recommend them to anyone who loves side-scrolling platformers with RPG elements, the plot is a bit light but still entertaining, but the game mechanics are just flawless!

Another vote for Guacamelee! and Valdis Story: Abyssal City. Both for PC, both fairly recent releases. You can get them off GOG DRM free:

Guacamelee! is a co-op metroidvania at that, pretty rare in that regard.

I'm just gonna leave these lists here:

I see a lot of Cave Story and someone mentioned Rogue Legacy. These were my two choices. Also, go online and try to find some ROMs of the Castlevania and Metroid classics via a Gameboy emulator. I caught up with the series this way and had a good time too.

Well technically Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth has that style, but it is more about recruiting and leveling up characters. There are lots of optional dungeons to loot and traverse though.

Well, Dark Souls could be considered a Metroidvania in 3r person. It has all the elements, and then some more.

Not really sure since I haven't played any of the Metroids, but Rogue Legacy on Steam looks similar and is a really fun game.

i'm gonna agree with rogue legacy here. it is perma-death , although the money you get can be spent at the start of your next run, and you can buy permanent upgrades or gear so there's a small amount of carry-over

Agreed, I've always felt that Zelda and Metroid felt more similar to each other than Metroid and Castlevania titles.

OT: Speaking of Zelda, since you have a 3DS OP, I would recommend A Link Between Worlds. You get to explore most of the map from near the beginning, lots of exploration with every new item you get. A very Metroid-y kind of Zelda experience.

Captcha: HAVE FUN, of course, anyone who plays A Link Between Worlds gets just that. ^.^

Hey chinangel, always nice to meet another Castlevania fan. In addition to the games already mentioned, here's a pretty good list http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/multi/Essays/essay-squalidpumpkin5.htm

This was true before Symphony of the Night took what Super Metroid did and improved on it with the power of PS1 disc space. After which many more games in the series followed a similar formula. So aside from the 3D entries there's two dominant styles in the Castlevania series, the linear and much harder "Classicvania" games, then the "Metroidvanias".

Ever heard of Rogue Legacy? Its similar in spirit, but its got randomized dungeons so the level design isn't as good. Still a fun game, kind of metroidvania in a way.
